This
The only technology we have in our arsenal that affords protection to both hardware and software is the Trusted Computing Platform, manifested in the Trusted Platform Module. It isnt perfect, but its what weve got. It is at the greatest risk from organized piracy and counterfeiting, but Apple also has the best last-resort that money can buy: Apple has a TPM baked into every Intel-based Mac.
The TPM equips OS X with the power to verify at boot time that, yes, this is a genuine Mac. It can further ensure that its install media hasnt been tampered with, and that no software has wedged itself between the firmware and the OS boot loader to trick OS X into mistaking a clone for a true Mac. What the TPM does for OS X it can also do for Mac applications, which is of great importance to all Mac developers. They're talking about a chip on the mobo that allows Apple -- or whoever else builds systems with this thing -- to decide in advance what software you're going to be allowed to run. If you write your own software, you may have to get Apple's permission to run it. They could decide that compilers are one of the things you shouldn't run, as they allow you to write virii.

FOR FUCK'S SAKE
THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS "VIRII".
THE PLURAL OF "VIRUS" IS "VIRUSES".
STOP DOING THIS.
And Apple will need some good luck patching GCC (the compiler XCode uses) to use TPM. That pesky GPL, eh?
Yager's an arse.

Why would Apple need luck with that?
I think you're thinking of what the GPL v3 says. But Apple is using a version of gcc that is under the GPL v2, which says nothing about DRM.

Because the community would un-patch it, pronto.

But
The chip decides. Not the software. That makes it 'trusted'.
Shit.

But the software has to talk to the chip, right?
This does assume, of course, that the TPM mojo is put into the compiler and not some library somewhere.
My opinion on this is split. On the one hand, TPM is evil and nasty and whatnot. On the other, Apple and MS have a right to exist and to sell whatever products they like on the basis that if you don't like them, you're free not to buy them.
TPM is unlikely to be a sufficiently strong disincentive to stop me buying a new Intel Mac at the end of this year - especially given Apple's nature as a hardware, not software company.

In order to run at all.
And GPLed/OSS need not apply.

Except they need developers to write apps.
And no developer will write apps they don't think will run on the platform.
So how will they keep bad developers and good developers sorted out?
TCP is like nukes - use them and everybody loses. Developers will abandon the platform and take the customers with them.

Agreed but...
my question was why Apple would need luck to be able to patch gcc to do TCP. I have no questions about whether TCP would be a very stupid thing for them to do.
That is, Peter was suggesting that they couldn't do what Yager was recommending. I don't see that. Obviously they don't want to do that, but that is separate.
Cheers, Ben
