New InfoWorld is "changing direction"
I've been keeping up with [link|http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/04/18/16survguide_1.html|Bob Lewis]. Seems the further I get from code the more sense he makes. Well, they're dropping his column. His last is in the link above.

New What's the new direction?
New direction as in we managed to kill off a thriving forum community - why not kill off all those columnists as well, since nobod remains to comment on them?
New I don't know what it is, because . . .
. . I don't read computer magazines anymore, but I do notice the current editor is doing better, it's up to 70 pages from 52.

New Maybe it's becoming an OS/2 fanzine? :-)
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New What are you on, and why aren't you sharing with the class?
New Maybe USA Today will get hold of some real evidence.
Like the vote logs showing OS/2 actually did win the award without "ballot stuffing zealots".

New USA Today?!? Surely you jest...
(Did I just call you Shirley?)

"So don't pay attention to the approval ratings that say 68% of Americans disapprove of the job this man is doing. I ask you this, does that not also logically mean that 68% approve of the job he's not doing? Think about it. I haven't."

I get the IT Catalysts newsletters. He just had his first IT Catalysts conference in Vegas. I think his girls are in college now.

Yes, the farther you get from the code, the more sense he makes. You're becoming a manager, he's been one for 15-20 years at Perot Systems, one of the best managed companies in America.

I think a bunch of us are growing out of coding and into more management, project management, people stuff and such.

Broomberg is obviously at the head of the pack, but many on the board aren't coders anymore.

I'm still in "the gap", not quite out of coding, not quite into management yet.
"The gap" is always uncomfortable.

New Excuse me?
Ahead of the pack?
To not coding?

I spent the day polishing a Perl system that automates file processing, spooling, and job submissions to a 3rd party high end printer spooling environment.

I have no direct reports (I mentor) and I'm always deep into tech.

Code is my life.
New Sorry - my bad
I don't get over to the other forums much and a lot of what gets posted in the 2 forums I barely have time to read seems to be your "management" escapades.

After working long hours, we did get our stuff deployed to Production about 9pm Friday night.

Glen Austin
New Selective reading, a well as available posts
Understood.

I'll post a "management" story on Open or Jobs becuase they have a wider audience than coding posts.

I don't post many coding posts becuase I typically (at least I think I do) know what I need to do, and I post in Linux or Development when looking for help
New sounds like me
not quite out of coding, not quite into management yet.
I now have a junior programmer to manage.

New and me
I spend more time managing than coding these days. I've actually enjoyed the fact we have a massive backlog of work because it's given me the opportunity to get stuck in and do some proper coding again.
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New Wow, hadn't noticed that
I've been getting the newsletter, too. Something he said in one of them reminded me of a conversation from the old IWE. I tried to look it up, and noticed there were a bunch of columns I hadn't read. It didn't even occur to me that they'd still have three year old columns posted right up with the current ones. After a quick look around, I see a bunch of discontinued colums still on the main "Opinions" page.
