I seem to recall that there is no penalty for 32 bit mode on the Opteron, while when in 64 bit mode it needs to to a bit more work for the 64 bit data path alignments.

64 bit is great when the memory size requires it, or when you have no choice (EMC powerpath drivers). Other than that, no win.

I've seen conflicting reports on that.

Of course throwing around 64 bit pointers is slower. But I've heard that having compilers actually say what registers to use, rather than having the chip trying to figure that out behind your code's back, is a Good Thing.
