New How 'bout manhole covers made ENTIRELY out of chocolate?
New It was a reference to a Larry Niven short story.
The question "What good is a chocolate covered manhole cover?" was intended to identify overly bright people to aliens as I recall.
New For those of us who missed the story
What good is a chocolate covered manhole cover?

[Asks the guy who's apparently not overly bright.]

New It's been a while
But I seem to recall that it was an open ended question to generate discussion. At the end, the discovered bright people were kidnapped by a robot working for aliens, who left them on a planet with a chocolate covered manhole which was the only known good food available.

I suspect that the story was just a vehicle to allow Niven to go on about Adam and Eve legends, genetics, and ... (memory dims)

They can't all be the best he's written. Oh, well...
New But it would kill me
No milk pills.
New Perhaps Niven considered you expendable.
This was about 30 years ago IIRC. Your problems were probably not terribly important to him at the time. Or he didn't think of it at all.
Ringworld was unstable too. Feces occurs...
New Exactly.
Some people are talking at a party about how this one other guy is a walking intelligence test, that he'd be perfect if aliens were somehow trying to figure out who the smartest people in society were. He keeps throwing out these wild ideas to get people talking - but every once in a while, there's a bum idea, such as chocolate coated manhole covers. They leave the party, then find themseleves alone on an alien planet with a chocolate coated manhole cover. Discussion ensues about horse breeding as applied to humans.
When somebody asks you to trade your freedoms for security, it isn't your security they're talking about.
New You are becoming Drook.
