"Mr. Galbraith was one of the most widely read authors in the history of economics; among his 33 books was "The Affluent Society" (1958), one of those rare works that forces a nation to re-examine its values. He wrote fluidly, even on complex topics, and many of his compelling phrases \ufffd among them "the affluent society," "conventional wisdom" and "countervailing power" \ufffd became part of the language."

RIP, old friend. We'll miss you.
New He was incredibly influential in 20th century.
Even at his advanced age he was "sharp as a tack" on a recent PBS interview.

Any opinions expressed by me are mine alone, posted from my home computer, on my own time as a free american and do not reflect the opinions of any person or company that I have had professional relations with in the past 50 years. meep
New He's done better than his critics
Look at what truly free markets have wrought in countries that listened to Friedman et al. For instance Chile under Pinochet. Currently Eastern Europe is littered with the train wrecks from those who tried to go to capitalism too fast, one of the worst of which is Russia. (Seriously, the quality of life degraded so far, so fast in Russia that many look back on the Communists with nostalgia.)

Cheers,
Ben
I have come to believe that idealism without discipline is a quick road to disaster, while discipline without idealism is pointless. -- Aaron Ward (my brother)
