Therefore, punish him by not executing him
The way to sell a life imprisonment is that an execution suggests that Al-Qaeda is a maor threat, which gives them credibility, whilst non-execution suggests they're merely an annoying distraction.
Matthew Greet
Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin? - Mark Renton, Trainspotting.

Reasonable short view
As long as he is in prison, sentenced to life-no parole, he is still in play as far as his brothers-in-arms are concerned. His BIA are in the business of terror and embarrassing the US. If they can grab someone/something and make the US cut him loose after sentencing him, they win big time. Dead, nobody in the US will remember him 6 months from now. His compatriots may remember him longer but I don't see them holding failures in high regard. They may get a little anti-death penalty action but nothing worth talking about. Ideally, they should hamstring his legs and cripple his arms and turn him over to the familys and bury the body in a pig carcass. That might provide some deterrence. But what do I know?

Has that ever happened?
I'm unaware of anyone ever being released from Federal prison in a prisoner exchange.
Also, if al Qaeda really wanted him, wouldn't they have tried to get him back in the last 1700 or so days since he was arrested?
I don't think al Qaeda cares about him one pico-iotta. Remember the tape of bin Laden [link|http://observer.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,6903,619480,00.html|laughing] about his guys on the planes?
Life in prison is probably the best punishment for him, IMHO.
Cheers, Scott.

I don't know if it's happened in the US..
I seem to recall something like that happening in Italy or Spain but I don't recall details. I tend to doubt that his buddies care much either. It was just a thought. I don't have any strong feeling about the sentence as long as it keeps him from continuing his preoccupation of trying to make US citizens go away in a flash. Prison works, as does execution. I don't think there is any practical deterrence for fanatic whackjobs so that really isn't an issue.

You have no idea how often I get this.
I have hearing problems. I sometimes lipread. I'm already tall...
You do the math.
When somebody asks you to trade your freedoms for security, it isn't your security they're talking about.
