New Apple unveils software that lets Macs run Windows
From [link|http://www.computerworld.com/softwaretopics/os/macos/story/0,10801,110220,00.html?source=NLT_MAC&nid=110220|ComputerWorld]
APRIL 05, 2006 (COMPUTERWORLD) - Apple today unveiled a public beta of "Boot Camp," software that allows its latest Intel-based Macintosh desktop and laptop machines to run Windows XP natively.
The software will be included in the next version of Mac OS X, version 10.5 or "Leopard," which is due out late this year.

Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many customers have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apples superior hardware now that we use Intel processors, Philip Schiller, Apples senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing said in a statement. We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch.

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

New Dual boot is so last century
We want [link|http://www.techworld.com/opsys/news/index.cfm?newsID=5712|virtualization].

Virtualisation software company Parallels said it will announce a virtualisation product for Intel-powered Macs, with more details becoming available later this week.

According to spokesman Ben Rudolph: "We will enable users to run multiple operating systems (like Linux and Windows) simultaneously with Mac OS X. This is not simply a "dual-boot" but instead gives our users the ability to use Windows or any other operating system at the same time as Mac OS X, enabling users to enjoy the comfort of their Mac OS X desktop while still being able to use critical applications from other OSes."

Parallels is a privately held, US-based software company that launched its first virtualisation tool, Parallels Workstation, last year. The Russian-developed software competes directly with VMware Workstation and Microsoft Virtual PC, albeit -- at the time of launch - -at a lower price.

Since then. VMware has started giving away VMware Player.

New It's slick
I'll be buying it in a couple days when my AMEX starts its next billing cycle.

So far I have XP running on it. Network transfers seem a bit slower than under OS X, but nothing terrible. I've installed Firefox and iTunes so far. iTunes was able to see my iMac' s library and I was able to play music and videos (even hi-def 720p ones!) over the network without any problems. The hi-def videos had some occasional jitter and shearing that are not apparent when I ran the same video using the MacBook's OS X copy of iTunes. Just for grins I put some videos the MacBook's OS X's iTunes and set it up to share. I then ran iTunes under XP where it saw and played back the video. The normal videos played back fine, but the hi-def videos had a much much bigger problem with jitter and shearing.

When I initially set up Parallels and switched XP to full-screen(which transitions using the Mac's "rotating cube" effect), I changed XP's resolution to 1280x800 to match the MacBook's display. When I switched back to windowed mode, the display remained 1280x800. My MacAddict arrived today and included an overview of Boot Camp and Parallels. It had a side box with "Tools Rule" that said to start the Windows VM, then switch to OS X(while leaving Windows running) and go to Parallel's menu bar and select the option "Install Parallels Tools". Doing this causes XP to install some new drivers for better integration with the Mac. MacAddict didn't know what all it added, but I noticed right away that after doing this XP's screen resolution automatically changed based in weither it was windowed or in full-screen mode.

I need to track down my OS/2 or eComStation CDs, they got packed away when I gave lincoln my old PC. Hopefully I can find my eCS registration keys as well.

I' ve got 2 VMs with parallels: windows 2000 and ubuntu 6.06. Very impressed so far.

There's info in the read me about the parallels tools - they are necessary for a windows VM, imo.

I'll post some screenies later.

I also found my eCS 1.1 disks(OS/2) and was able to get it installed once I told it to use IBM's IDE driver instead of the DANI driver.

Found a glitch with the mouse pointer emulation. Galactic Civilizations changes the mouse to colored pointers and they get scrambled. If I drop down to 256 colors they look OK, but it's not worth doing that. I can recreate the scrambled mouse pointer problem by changing the system pointer to one of the colored sets.

An alternate system is just that. You should be able to have another Mac system, for that matter.

But, when in Mac mode, is the XP file system visible, even R/O? Linux has perhaps too many variations to be easily handled.

Doze.. as the old '53 Plymouth (your uncle gave you.)

Doze... your Legacy CP/M-ripoff on 5" floppies, with bolt-on 16-bitness - which you run long enough to get a few files over to the Modrin visage of your sleek new, rounded, Quality box.. until you can deliver the message to CP/M: Sorry old-timer, but it's 'ought-Six and you've been Outsourced.

[Alas, neighbor's new Powerbook is PowerPC :-/ else that new-hP could be on eBay before you can say Boot Camp in Swahili.]

But Then.. if I have this right: seems to me that, when attention finally turns to crafting nasties for *nix-like OSs / to expand all those keylogger profits - just mayhap the non-Intellish PowerPC guts shall not merit nearly so much $Attention from the MBA-savvy slimes (??) I'm presuming that a decent wealth-creating root kit du jour.. needs some assembly language goodness, as the competition gets tougher. But what do I know about porting.

New Nice link. Thanks.
