Welcome to IWETHEY!

New So I loaded Tiger on the Mini tonight.
Spinning beach ball of death for my son 30 minutes into a Garage Band session. This doesn't bode well.

New I am deafened by the irony...
... of a Macintosh utility site that doesn't frakking work in Safari. I had to go there in Camino to get the download link to work.

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New That's changed, then.
I might drop him an email. That's a bit embarrassing.

No need. Someone's already filed that particular bug.

New RAM?
My iBook came with 256m. It was so-so under Panther, but Tiger made it positively slow. I just add a gig to it (maxed it out), and now it's great.

New No, it's not just slow.
It's wedged. And there's a Gig of RAM in it.

New Worse than Windows
And I mean the Bad Old Days of Windows.

I've used Applejack. No joy. The damn thing just freezes up while the screensaver is on. Sometimes it comes back a half hour later, sometimes not.

New Bad plugin?
Does what's outlined [link|http://www.richardsnotes.org/archives/2005/05/01/tiger-upgrade-issues-with-ical/|here] help?

Someone had similar problems to you and was only able to fix it by doing a [link|http://www.codecomments.com/archive240-2005-11-683450.html|fresh install without preserving the user's settings].

There's a dearth of information out there on solutions to problems like this, as I'm sure you know. I hope you get it figured out.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Could be.
I just put 10.4.5 on; if this doesn't fix things I'll do a backup and fresh install (GAH). I thought these things were supposed to be free of this kind of aggravation?

Linux may be clunky, but it doesn't just silently go to pot like this. The worst I had with the Linux laptop preceding the Mini was some Debian package rot.

New Can you SSH in during Beachball Time to get any clues?
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New Didn't have it enabled.
I've since turned on remote access. No beach ball, the last two times. It hung while the screen saver was on and the mouse cursor was nowhere to be found.

-scott anderson

New Wossinthelogs?
Also, this sounds like bad hardware.

New This might be the issue:
And it always happens when you're using Safari, right? The Internet stops working, etc.

This is a known problem that existed sporadically on 10.4.2 and has just gotten a lot worse for some people with the Java Release 2 update. It's a conflict between launchd (whatever that is) and Java. I read a report on Macfixit.com this morning, and there's also a thread on the Apple.com forums. Additionally, I have filed a bug report with Apple (because I experienced this crash yesterday).

There are three ways to fix it if you're having serious problems.
1. When you start having the Safari problems, unplug your ethernet connection (if it's not wireless). This resets launchd.
2. Try running both Java utility programs in your Applications/Utilities folder. Reset or clear your Java caches.
3. If you must, archive-and-reinstall Tiger, but don't apply the Java Release 2 update afterwards.

At least, this sounds very similar to the issues I had with the machine *before* the Tiger upgrade. Now the hangs come much more often.

-scott anderson

New Java's *always* been cranky for me on PCs. :-(
New Since I started using the Official Sun JRE/JDKs
and not the IBM or Blackwatch builds, most things have calmed down for me.

I still have one application written a long time ago that causes fits.

New Nah.
It's the parents, see.

Can you imagine having your star employee picked up by a goomba-bird-waving, spork-using, spooky-glowing-eye-having danger to society like wor Scott?

Wouldn't do much for the share price, I wot.
