Cheney spokeswoman Mary Matalin denied yesterday that Enron officials prodded Cheney to raise the issue with Gandhi, widow of slain Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and daughter-in-law of assassinated Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. "This is not our issue," Matalin said. "It was in the briefing papers, so he asked the question. The vice president didn't remember that topic at all. I asked him directly." White House and other top officials were interested in the Dabhol project partly because the taxpayer-backed Overseas Private Investment Corp. provided insurance against losses resulting from political problems in India. Overseas could face exposure as high as $300 million. The $3 billion Dabhol project was started in 1992 and built amid political wrangling in India that included allegations of bribery. The plant eventually was completed, but it has never been used. It involved at least 40 international finance institutions, including Overseas, and Enron's partners included General Electric and the Bechtel Corp. The e-mails indicate the State and Treasury departments also were deeply involved in making Enron's case. The highest-level contact they verify was Cheney's June 27 meeting with Gandhi, president of the opposition Congress Party. It's not like they can't afford it... a scum sucking representative does not have to be appointed, pro bono... most of our leadership seems to be petty criminals who will jump at the cash. This is not a recent development. I'm not sure where you are going with all the announcements of high placed corruption. It's not news. Our current president is a sock puppet, bought and paid for before the ballots were printed. The crook before him franchised out, for personal gain, anything his state had that was worth anything when he was governor, and continued the practice when he became president. The crook before him... or most of the Senate and Congress...oh crap... this is depressing... It's not news though. So do you have a point anywhere here, or are you just glorying in the muckraking? The scum-suckers also hold a lot of stock in many of the Fortune 500 companies. So they buy out the winners, to make them pass laws that benefit the companies that they hold stock in. That is why "Fair Use" vanished from the new digital copyright act. That is also why the ADA laws are going to be changed so that some disabilities are not longer compensated. It is these who have created 'temps' of more and more Muricans -- penned up into little cubicles and chained to little Tee Vee screens for ~50 hrs/week.. with maybe 2-weeks off/yr. (for a minority) and 0-off for now a near majority of workers: no energy left for noticin shit. The White Hats: anyone who Notices the above, begins to organize -- find Real funds for -- a coalition amongst the millions now working for scum like Manpower, Inc. (or destined to be, very soon - especially in IT IMhO). Control the Language - you control the sheep. The Librul / Cunservative labels are utterly and permanently meaningless. As with the Augean Stables, there's never a dearth of muck; however - one must be careful not to shovel shit against the tide. Methinks that what we (all) lack right now are - enough really excellent speakers: as from Twain --> HL Mencken (Tom Lehrer! does it with song). The more TLA-ridden and convoluted the speech habits taught wannabe polit. speech writers - the more skewerable is their drivel BUT.. The sort of bald-faced simplicity which is capable of cutting through cant so effectively that - the HS dropout (and even the MBA) and the chicken-plucker all get it right away! Now That needs artistry, especially re timing. If you saw the recent 4 hrs on Mark Twain (in 2 sessions) on PBS: seems he may have been the most enthralling speaker Murica has ever heard and.. he wrote about his noticing the supreme effect of... .. .. timing, and set out to perfect it. Problem with written convention is, for timing .. ... ya gotta do weird stuff. Newspaper editors' copies of Strunk would never let ya get away with it. Anyways - we know what we lack (along with Laugh In and The Smothers Brothers). SNL says it all: There IS no decent humor on Prime Time Drivel at all. A humorless culture (or humor-deprived) is what gets us these inane speeches with silly slogans and 0 content. Find a solution to our cultural desert and .... they might even Love ya - 'cause I don't believe yet that: Muricans are nearly as stupid as the crap they are forced to watch.
