New Stay dry, Critter and Amy!
5 inches of rain in a day is a bit on the ridiculous side.

New Re: Stay dry, Critter and Amy!
5 inches in one day is no big deal.

After watching the 10 o'clock news last night and seeing all of the flooded streets, I shouted at the TV: "Doesn't anybody in Texas know how to build a proper drainage system? Send them up to Chicago and meet Deep Tunnel!"

Back in 1996 I suffered through 13 inches in 24 hours. I only got about 8 inches in my basement while a few neighbors had several feet. Lost a lot of possessions, so I learned my lesson - buy shelving!

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

New No basements in texas...
...or at least not in this part of texas. The clay expands and contracts so much that it tears up any basement (and a lot of foundations as well). The problem with Dallas/Fort Worth is the Trinity. Most of the time it's just a glorified drainage ditch. But when it rains, it can get a mile wide.
New Re: No basements in texas...
That's the problem - you've got nowhere to go when a tornado comes bearing down on you.

I remember the newscasts when that tornado hit Jarrell (just north of Austin) in May 1997. Several areas had nothing left but the concrete slabs. The residents of those homes didn't have a prayer.

New I always wondered about that
Whenever you see tornado aftermath photos, all you see is bare slabs. I could never figure out why you wouldn't have a basement.

New Yup, we're many miles away from Cyclone Larry. Thanks!
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New Thanks, Alex
We had fun watching the virtual river in our alley. Thank heavens we had plenty of basketball to watch...kept us from going anywhere during the deluge.

Shook our heads while watching the news footage of the idiots who thought they could drive in 2ft. deep water near White Rock Lake. One would chance it, then the next, then one would stall out and need a High Water Rescue.

Floods bring out the stupidity in people.

Soggily,
Amy

New Nah, it's always out. Just that floods are less forgiving.

New Glad to hear you're fine!
And after vising you folks in December, I certainly know what that alley is like.
