Looking for portable DVD player.
To use at the gym. Would like to burn TV shows / movies - AVI, MPG, whatever, and play them while exercising.
Does such a beast exist?

It's not clear what you want.
For use in a gym, I'd think something like a video [link|http://www.apple.com/ipod/ipod.html|iPod] would be ideal. But I think it's very limited for playback. They claim 150 hours of video playback (320x240, 750 kbps) and 20 hour battery life (for music). I don't know how you'd get your shows on there - it's probably easy if you feel like giving Apple $1.99 an episode.
There are portable DVD players - [link|http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=491|newegg] has them starting at < $100.
A portable DVD player that also records? I haven't seen any.
HTH.
Cheers, Scott.

Handbrake and Lostify
I use [link|http://handbrake.m0k.org/|Handbrake] to transfer DVDs to my iPod. Lately I've been watching Season 1 of Northern Exposure on my lunch break.
The tags that denote "TV Show" cannot be set via iTunes. If it's not set then all the episodes clutter up the Movie Folder on the iPod. I use [link|http://home.comcast.net/~lowellstewart/lostify/|Lostify] to set the TV Show flag, Episode #, Season, and other info so that the episodes will appear under the iPod's TV Shows folder where they're nicely sorted into subfolders of Series then subfolders of Seasons.

Handbrake Lite
This is a cut-down version of Handbrake that is specifically designed to transcode DVDs to iPod video files.
More of a one-click solution, if you wish.

Check here
[link|http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers|http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers]
I think most players will support SVCDs in addition to DVDs but It looks like support for any other format is more rare.
You could also go this route: [link|http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=210&subcategory=211&product=12985&nav=1|http://www.creative....oduct=12985&nav=1]
PS: I'm not sure where you guys are reading that he wants to burn DVDs with the player.

Burn them - while exercising? Yeah, that IS a stretch.
Which, of course is all for the good: Stretching is essential after exercise.

Drs who treat plantar fasciitis apparently haven't heard.
And I don't believe it either. Unless running counts as "the same motions" - and in that case doesn't it apply to almost any sport? E.g. [link|http://www.laurelfootandanklecenter.com/sub.php?page=prob_heel_plantar|Laurel Foot and Ankle Center]: Plantar fasciitis is caused by inflammation of the connective tissue that stretches from the base of the toes, across the arch of the foot, to the point at which it inserts into the heel bone. Also called "heel spur syndrome," the condition can usually be successfully treated with conservative measures such as use of anti-inflammatory medications and ice packs, stretching exercises, orthotic devices, and physical therapy. Cheers, Scott. (Whose wife - who has run for about 30 years - has it pretty bad, and who seems to have a mild case himself.)

I don't recall them saying anything about theraputic value
The surprising (to me) point was that stretching -- during a warm-up -- beyond the range of motion you intend to exercise is unnecessary. They saw no differences in reported pain, recovery time, range of motion, anything you would expect to be helped.

Can't find a link to what I heard, but found this
[link|http://archives.cnn.com/2000/HEALTH/diet.fitness/09/11/fitness.stretching.ap/|Experts debate benefits of stretching with exercise]
Apparently they've been looking at this for a while. The one I heard on the radio sounds like it was reporting on a recent study designed to address the issue described in the link above. While looking for the link, I found some saying that stretching actually decresases muscle strength, and that the only pain-relief benefit is to get the brain accustomed to pain signals from the muscle.

Nit
A recent medical study suggests that stretching before or after exercise serves no useful purpose, except for activities that are going to involve the same motions. Warming up, still needed. Stretching, no point.

Sorry, was not clear enough.
I'll burn them on my current DVD burner on my Linux box.
This is strictly for playback.
And no, DVD is not a requirement, but the other portable players have tiny screen so I figure the 2 go hand in hand, ie: DVD and decent screen size.

Yes.
I have one. It's an [link|http://au.lge.com/md/product/prodcategorylist.do?actType=detail&currPage=1&categoryId=0200000302&parentCategoryId=0200000003&categoryLevel=3&productId=1100000799|LG DP9911P] and can play DVD-RWs made on our Toshiba DVD recorder more-or-less okay (it gets slighly out of sync from time to time and then suddenly races to catch up - I think it's the encoding mode at fault). It has a 7" 16:9 screen and a full battery lasts about 4 hours. LG have a slightly more expensive model that can also play DivX encoded content.
My wife found it for me at Christmas because the older one I had had for 3 or 4 years (chinese thing rebadged by Voxson) couldn't play DVD-RWs and it had a failing lidswitch. Basically, I wore it out, which I still think is kinda unusual for a portable DVD player, but there you are. It spent quite a few months with me on the morning and evening train trips.
There used to be a number of Panasonic, Sony etc models, but the market here seems to have been swamped by a-bit-too-cheap weird-brand asian imports that even the retailers don't like selling. So be choosy. You may have to visit quite a number of electronics stores.
