Evolution question
I've got Evolution set to leave messages on the server, and to only download new messages. Today I checked my messages via Yahoo, and it downloaded everything I've ever gotten. I thought when I selected "Leave messages on server" it only meant leave them there when I download them. I assumed that deleting the message in Evolution would also delete it from the server.
Do I have a bad assumption somewhere? Or will it not do what I expected (and want) it do do?

First the earth cooled.
And then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died and they turned into oil. And then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes. And Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it.

I assumed that deleting the message in Evolution would also delete it from the server. Um, no. That would be a bad assumption.

Have you ever "Expunged"?
Sure it is deleted... but it ain't thrown in the trash.
Or if you tell Evo to Empty the trash, it'll get rid of all deleted messages.
At one point I had 15GB of un-removed messages that were deleted.
You could also have Evo "Empty the Trash" when you close it... taking a few moments of time to trash the stuff.
I ain't quite seeing where that is though, for the auto expunge on close. Running Evo 2.4.2.1

Thought I was set to expunge on exit
Just did it manually, and it seems to have worked. Time to look for more settings.

using pop or imap to get your messages?
if using pop and selecting save messages on server and you delete them locally they appear "new" again. thanx, bill

What I want
1. New message comes in. I check it from Evolution. I delete it. It's gone from the server.
2. New message comes in. I check it from Evolution. I leave it. It stays on the server, but is marked as "not new". (Not sure of the implementation. Never thought about that detail before now.) Can Yahoo download only new items? Not sure.
3. New message comes in. I check from Yahoo. It is marked as read. In Evolution, I now see the header, but it is marked as read.
I never thought about the implementation for this. Is "mark read" something that depends on my client? Or is it an attribute in the IMAP message store?

I'm prefectly happy to leave this as one of those things ...
... Other People Worry About™. As long as I know how to set up my client, then quickly forget the uninteresting implementation details.

If it's all IMAP, then yes, that's how it should work.
I have three clients connecting to my own IMAP server and it works just as you described. You might want to check that all accesses to your mailbox are indeed via IMAP.
'Marked Read' is an IMAP attribute, yes. In actuality, it's not quite that simple because there's another flag that the server uses to show that no client has seen this email and they interact a little but. However, the interaction is documented in the RFC and it's not hard for clients to get it right.

Yahoo says it's POP only
But it also has an option to only retrieve new mail. Still not sure how they'd implement it. Just going to try the option and see what happens. (But considering it's been months since I thought to check from the Yahoo account, I don't imagine I'm going to spend that much time working on it.)

Then you have a problem.
POP doesn't function very well with 'leaving mail behind' because that's not what it's designed for. There are hacks to do it, but there is special magic required in the client and a lot of them don't care. That's why Yahoo fetched all the email you have ever received: because as far as the server is concerned, you *haven't* received it yet. Even though Evolution is able to give you the fiction that you have.
