New want to tan your own hides? useful site
[link|http://www.braintan.com/|http://www.braintan.com/]
You can make soft, washable leather with emulsified oils and wood smoke. This is commonly known as brain, smoke or Indian tanning. Animal brains are traditionally used as the source of emulsified oils, hence the name, but you can also use eggs or a mixture of soap and oil. Brain tan is ideal for clothing, bags, beadwork and all kinds of things (such as shoe-laces, pot holders, hair ties, holding parts of your truck together).

New Were you watching the History Channel last night?
There was a show on about the various methods of making leather that included a segment with a couple that does the same thing (might even have been them).

Apparently, the most widely used tanning method these days is chrome tanning (which turns the hides blue after which they are dyed, even for "natural" leather I guess). Vegetable tanning (from the ground-up bark of trees) was also covered.
