Here, (under Windows), the "ell" looks much like it does in the monotype.com face...sorta like a half swastika, with a stroke extending westward from the top of the vertical stroke, and another stroke extending about the same distance eastward fromthe bottom of the vertical stroke. (The difference between monotype.com and vera mono is that on vera, the junction of the eastward stroke with the vertical stroke is curved, where in monotype.com, the junction is squared, so I know its not a font aliasing issue).
On the website, the "ell" renders more like an old block numeral one; very much like an "ell" in the Rockland face, only with the horizontal strokes longer and more pronounced.
If that's a hinting difference, then that's one helluva hint! I've personally never seen hinting that fundamentally alters the presentation of the typeface. Have you?
