In the past several there has been no reason except brand loyalty to buy Intel on the desktop. AMD first edged them out on the desktop back in 2004, and have slowly been building since then.

AMD's challenge now is diversification not raw power. Intel still has the edge in the other parts of the CPU market. In particular, Intel would be in much worse shape but they still control the laptop market. AMD has only recently taken the first steps into that market.
