AMD is... starting to beat Intel at its own game.
[link|http://news.com.com/2100-1014_3-6045843.html|Three Strikes] with a Quote from the Article: In the first seven weeks of 2006, AMD's share in desktops in that area climbed to 81.5 percent, while Intel's has slid to 18.5 percent, Baker said. That's almost a complete reversal of their typical relative positions.
In notebooks, Intel's share has declined to 63 percent, even though Baker and others generally agree that Intel enjoys a technological advantage in laptops. Am I missing something? Or did Little Endian become Big Endian, while Big Endian became Little Endian? Please apply this filter to previous line: s/Endian/Indian/gI don't really know.

No reason to buy Intel desktop
In the past several there has been no reason except brand loyalty to buy Intel on the desktop. AMD first edged them out on the desktop back in 2004, and have slowly been building since then.
AMD's challenge now is diversification not raw power. Intel still has the edge in the other parts of the CPU market. In particular, Intel would be in much worse shape but they still control the laptop market. AMD has only recently taken the first steps into that market.

Chimpzilla pounds Chipzilla . . .
. . and at the higher end Intel's Itanium misadventure is costing them plenty, though Xeons are still selling well.
I've built only a few Intel machines for many years, all for a CAD house. Intel used to have better floating point performance, it doesn't now but these guys still want Intel.
Right now I'm struggling to get OS/2 running on a Pentium 4 machine (never had problems with AMD). This machine was built for the CAD house but diverted in an emergency to serve a year as a temporary server at a client's site. It's back and now it's mine so I'm trying to use it.

Yeah, it's good Intel has competition for a change.
I wonder though whether [link|http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=29657|this] analysis holds up. Meaning that Intel is going to continue to hold Dell and the big players until AMD can start cranking out a lot more chips. But with the rise of White Boxes, Lenovo, etc., AMD getting Dell may not be as huge a prize as it once would have been.
Cheers, Scott.

Production capacity has always been an AMD problem.
Their market has been growing faster than they can bring production on-line, which places a strict limit on how much of Intel's market they can take.

Also why they have not been driving prices down
It's also why they have not been driving prices down in the last couple of years. Why drive prices down when your already selling everything you can produce?
Back when AMD had second rate products they sold them by undercutting Intel heavily on price. Now they are priced as high as possible while still insuring they have a decent price/performance advantage over Intel.

And Still Damn cheaper.
Even the Opteron 8-way chips... are cheap compared to the equivalent Xeons with large on chip cache.

In a competitive market...
the price of a product should equal the marginal cost of the last producer.
So as long as AMD cannot meet demand, Intel sets the price.

Uh... Did you see the self-contradiction there, Ben?
I'd say, as long as AMD cannot meet demand, Intel can set pretty much any price it wants to -- because effectively it doesn't have any competition, in this sense.
Which would mean this isn't much of a competitive market. I mean, would you want to bet that the price they set is necessarily (or actually) equal to their marginal cost?

No contradiction, merely lack of implication
In economist's terms, CPUs are not a [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_competition|competitive market]. There is lots of competition, but that competition has glaring imperfections. Due to that fact, the price set will not necessarily be close to anyone's costs. Furthermore given the dynamics of the CPU industry, costs are not so simple to figure out. (For a start you need to price in risk since CPU companies regularly make huge investments that only pay off after many years in a quickly changing market.)
Therefore my first and second statements did not contradict each other. There merely was no implication.
My wording wrongly indicated that there was implication. That's wrong. What is true, though, is that the principle behind why the first statement is true also is behind why the second is true.

Dunno what to admire more;the sophistry or the condescension
Hey, mr Mathematician-PerlHacker, you don't pay too much attention to what the rest of us say when we talk about ourselves and what we do, do you?
Maybe you could explain big terms like competition and such in even smaller words for me... After all, I am only -- as I have mentioned here now and then -- an economist.

AMD is working on Socket AM2
Both Intel (Conroe) and AMD (Socket AM2 based chips) have major new design releases coming out this year. Both are still a few months away, and I have not seen a really valid test of either yet.
This is a big jump for both companies, which ever one proves to be better will probably give their company an edge in the market for a couple of years.

AMD have got to sort their fabbing out
Otherwise Intel will just marginalise them with economies of scale and sheer ability to supply.
