OK, NOW Google is evil in my books
I'm OK with their filtering their Chinese site. I understand their reasons, and accept that saying the government filters the results does undermine said government.
But I'm not OK with their redirecting [link|http://www.google.cn/|http://www.google.cn/] to [link|http://www.google.com/|http://www.google.com/] so that people can't see comparisons between their Chinese site and the American ones. (You can still see all other country-specific versions of Google, just not their China one.)
Cheers, Ben

That's weird, it's not redirecting here.
Maybe only from the States?

Possibly, try this URL

I have an explanation.
[link|http://images.google.cn/images?hl=zh-CN&q=tiananmen%20square&btnG=Google+%E6%90%9C%E7%B4%A2&sa=N&tab=wi|http://images.google...B4%A2&sa=N&tab=wi]
If you'll note here: [link|http://images.google.cn/preferences?hl=zh-CN&lr=&cr=countryCN|google.cn preferences] there is no such thing as "Safesearch off" you cannot turn it off. You can change it to moderate. But you cannot turn off safe mode == moderate
As soon as I force that change in the cookie, it re-directs to .com.
I believe that China actually Blocks google.com from inside China. That would effectivly remove any ability to do the safe=off mode.
Cheers!
P.S. Ben, to be honest, I would have thought you would have actually done that little bit of investigation yourself. But, it does not mean Google is evil. It is just obeying the laws in the Country of Service. They serve China *FROM* China. I am sure, if you looked you'd see other interesting things for us looking in from the outside, that is available to us, but would get a "redirect" from the Great Firewall of China.

For one thing, that's probably a reaction ("solution") to...
...the "misspell it as 'tianamen'" trick described by someone (Greg?) here last week.
For another, they've already been doing that, but the other way, for years: I've had immense problems getting it to respect my bookmark to the Advanced Search page; it used to redirect to google.fi every fucking time. (Which was driving me insane[*]; I much prefer English to Finnish.)
Lastly, though, to sum up: If the way it works is that people in China can't see this stuff at all -- and presumably don't get redirected to google.com -- then, from a pure "better search" point of view, they're just trying to do you a favour by redirecting you if possible (i.e, if you're not in China).
Sure, that can also be seen as trying to cover up the lack of search results the Chinese get, from us Westerners... But not exclusively so, AFAICS. A bit more grey, not just black-and-white.
[*]: OK, OK: Driving me even more insane.
