FWIW I haven't tried 8.1 on mine; just 8.0, and it failed miserably even in text mode.

New Well thats why...
...first...8.0 was CRAP CRAP CRAP.

...second...Presarios are CRAP CRAP CRAP.

Still. winmodem support is pretty much a given now. (unless you upgrade kernels...then you have to do it all over again(mutter).

PCMCIA support has been flawless...8.1 supported my generic ethernet card AND my DLink wireless card without any fuss.

Plus..since I'm on an Armada...the video support is fine...since its using the ATI chipset.

New I'll have to second your second note
I picked up SuSE over the weekend, and did the install on my server and on my Presario. The server went smoothly (although I'm still looking for a SAMBA config tool). The laptop on the other hand has been a mess.

The main failure I had was during hardware detection. This was the same point of failure I had with Mandrake 8.0. The difference is that SuSE allowed me to get around it using a manual install. During multiple such installs, I came to the conclusion that it was the USB causing the failure (it just locks up when it comes to starting up USB). I tried both USB modes even though it is a VIA based interface and the installation selects the UHCI module. But I can only get it to boot properly if I remove HOTPLUG(?).

Even with it booting, I'm still trying to get the network interface and modem working, and obviously I won't be able to use my GPS or Palm cradle which both have to connected with a USB/serial adaptor.
