Welcome to IWETHEY!

New No typing login ideas needed.
I am looking into a proximity authentication system.

Our corporate rules state that PCs must go into
screen saver, requiring a password, whenever left
alone.

We have factory floor PCs that material handlers
have to use. They share a login since they all use
the same app, and do not need to switch between people.

But it is constantly timing out, which causes them
to relogin MANY times a day.

I want to be able to allow them to carry a badge that
identifies them, and run some application on the PC that
will allow them back in.

This company claims to have the solutions, but it
is insecure.

Their HID card reader simply stuffs the card ID into the
password field. And everyone knows what the card id id.

Dumb.

But stylistically, the access method makes sense.

A sonar sensor can tell when someone is near the computer,
and will lock it when people walk away. But we still need
something a bit more secure for the actual authentication.

Any ideas?
New Thumbprint scanner?

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New Possible.
Prefer RFID though to ensure never have to touch the PC or keyboard unless it is part of the job.

But I still need the software that logs them in.
New RF-ID?
New Dumb question
Wouldn't it be easier to get an exception for the factory floor computers?
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail ... but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Damn...that was fun!"
New That is how it is now.
But we want to avoid that.

We can never be sure a non employee is on the floor.

We have customers practically live with us during disaster recoveries or high value print runs. They are allowed on the floor to review and supervise.

But there might be multiple customers.

And we get audited, with security people walking around.

So we need to do what we can.

New RFID is clearly the way to go
But ahything I said after that would be merely google-thoritative.

New what about a physical cutout instead of screensaver
a timing device on the monitor which cuts power, a rfid device that acts as a proximity switch to restore power to the monitor.
thanx,
bill
"the reason people don't buy conspiracy theories is that they think conspiracy means everyone is on the same program. Thats not how it works. Everybody has a different program. They just all want the same guy dead. Socrates was a gadfly, but I bet he took time out to screw somebodies wife" Gus Vitelli
