New 52-year-old grandfather ordered to Army duty

I'm fairly sure that some of our esteemed IWE members are of this age, also.

"The Army told Olson, a sergeant first class mechanic when he retired, to prepare for 18 months away from home after he passes his physical."

New \ufffdFirst they came for the Communists, but I was not a
Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.\ufffd

First they invaded Afghanistan, then Iraq; then Iran, Syria, Godwanaland, New Jersey - but when you check into the Army Motel, note the {???} for check-out time.

New Interesting how most US translations leave that 1st bit out.

It would seem, therefore, that the three human impulses embodied in religion are fear, conceit, and hatred. The purpose of religion, one might say, is to give an air of respectibility to these passions. -- Bertrand Russell

Cheers,

Count me in that number. My four presumptive grandchildren have all perished prenatally over the past thirty years, half by accident and half by design, and I myself was too canny to have signed up for (and too lucky to have been conscripted into) our Asian Adventure back in the day. My younger brother foolishly enlisted in the Navy 25 years ago (I reamed him a new one on the telephone when I learned this—"My generation didn't fight and die at Kent State so that you young punks could join the imperialist military!"—but have since apologized), and they actually attempted to retrieve him shortly after the commencement of our recent misadventure in far Araby. He advised them that he was still being monitored for a recurrence of cancer, and enquired as to the medical coverage he could expect. "We'll get back to you," quoth the press gang. Two years have elapsed; they haven't called again.

cordially,
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.
