New Will this work in my G4 desktop?
I have one of these: [link|http://www.andovercg.com/Desktop/Apple/Apple-Power_Mac_G4-10370.shtml|http://www.andovercg...ac_G4-10370.shtml]

with a hard drive that's really hurting for space. I just found this:

[link|http://www.compusa.com/adproducts/product_info.asp?product_code=309209&pfp=ADPRODUCTS|http://www.compusa.c...09&pfp=ADPRODUCTS]

and am wondering if its likely to work as a replacement main disk drive (internal)? What would the gotchas be? The last time I understood hard drive interfaces was when scsi was the usual thing.

New Dang, that's a good price
As long as the damn mail-in rebate shows up.

I upgraded my son's G3 iMac from its standard 6g drive to a 20g a couple years ago without issue.

I think you'll need to know 2 things: does the drive controller support ATA-100 and does it support a drive with that capacity.

edit: fixed tense

New you'll hit the 128 GB limit
need to get a PCI IDE controller card to run a drive > 128 GB.

Mac controller cards are pricy. Will a 120 GB drive work for you?

Apparently another option is to put the > 128 GB drive in an external case and connect it via firewire.

New My own experience

I have a circa-2000 G4 desktop and when my internal SCSI drives blew, I decided to try IDE drives since they seemed to be a better deal per megabyte.

At any rate, the G4 has an internal IDE bus so hooking up the drive shouldn't be an issue. One caveat, though, is that the IDE address bus on mine (and presumably yours) can only address 128 GB of disk space.

I got around this, however, by downloading and installing [link|http://www.speedtools.com/ATA6.shtml| this driver]. This lets you use drives over 128 GB. (No single partition can be greater than 128 GB, though.)

Read over the FAQ before you get it, though, to make sure this will work for you. I'm currently using a 300 GB IDE drive with this and haven't had a problem.

New That sounds like the ticket
I don't much care if its partitioned as multiple volumes as long as I can use all the space. Its mostly a file/web/music server anyhow.

New I'm pretty pleased so far

The 300 GB drive has Tiger on it (for DV and burning ISOs) and since I had an extra slot I slapped in an 80 GB drive to dual boot Debian.
