New How awful is Win Media Player 9?
Has anyone noted the details of how much fodder for AdAware and Spybot S&D is bundled-in?
Does one (as with Real) have to manually uncheck phone-home crap installed in Start-up list, before next reboot?
Does it want to d/l new 'improvements' periodically - gratuitously and without a denial-box?

Anyone know what it does to 9.x (98-SE) ?

Thanks,

moi

New It really isn't that bad.
Though, I can't imagine it putting up with no IE.

I 12 year old Daughter *HAD* to have Windows.

So, WXP is on it.

It actually catalogued and indexed my entire collection of music. 25000 songs... in about 10 minutes on a 1.4GHz Athlon.

And, to tell the turth, it does play things very well.

New Phoning Home
The privacy statment (this one is for WMP 10) does a pretty good job of listing all the ways it might phone home (or phone somewhere). Many of them can be disabled, some it will ask about during install as well. It doesn't leave any background processes running that I am aware of.

As a media player I like it. I sometimes wish I could launch two instances of it (one for music, other for muted video), but that doesn't come up much.

New It's not god-awful.
It has a few failings:

* You cannot tell it to never check for updates or new codecs. Unless you use a Registry hack to turn off the update sub-process completely. (IOW, it assumes you're on the Internet.)

* It depends on IE very closely. In fact, it thinks it's part of IE. For instance, switch WMP to "offline" mode and you'll find you've changed IE to "offline" mode, as well.

* You can't modify the labels it gives CD tracks. Well, I couldn't, although all I did was play them. Maybe if you rip CDs then it gives you the option, but I never did that.

* It doesn't know anything about Ogg Vorbis files. That's a shame as I was going to bring in my Ogg collection from Home.

New You can remedy the Ogg problem.
There are some plugins for media player that give it Ogg capabilities.
When somebody asks you to trade your security for freedom, it isn't your freedom they're talking about.
New Yes, it is.
It's dismal and a UI disaster.

Even Real Playurrrrrr is better.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New Oh, yes, I'd forgotten about that.
It's UI suffers from "lets re-invent everything!" which, although is almost always a bad idea, has been done much worse elsewhere.

New I was thinking of M.Y.O.B.
A few versions ago, I had a need to use it briefly. What slowed me down considerably was that they re-invented a whole heap of widgets when there was a nice range of standard Windows ones which I'm sure would have worked just fine.

New MYOB ported from the Mac, probably via a XP toolkit

New Thanks.. I think the IE alcoholic dependency
cuts it for me.
No way would I allow it to install, want-me-to install any version - for its basic functioning to well, 'function'.

Oh well. Just hastens my bullet/bite/i-Mac metamorphosis.
But not This month.

New Get Winamp

New I dunno, 5.094 seems ok to me with classic skin
Before this, I had v3.something on my last Winbox. What's wrong with it?

New I just upgraded to 5.1 under 2K
It no longer plays some older video types, and it phones home incessantly. It used to phone home when you opened it. It still does and you can deny the connection without any problem. Now when you close it, it continues to call home and continues until you kill it with task manager. I removed it.
New Did you forget to uncheck "report anonymous user statistics"

New Don't think so.
It's not important enough to reload it to see though. I had a working winamp, they pestered me to upgrade every time I ran the damn thing. After upgrading, it was broke. Remove and ignore forever. It's not my problem. I don't imagine that they care either.
New It's OK.

Oh, you mean for WINDOWS.

Well, that version sucks rocks.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New If you just want tunes...
...then iTunes is the daddy.

There are *no* really good integrated video solutions for Windows; you always end up with Real/WMP/Quicktime installed.

New I don't think 9 is compatible with 16-bit pseudoOSs
IIRC, you have to have at least the W2K problem to use 9 (or is that "nein"?)

Cheers,
Scott.
New Yes, you'd already nailed that
Forgot about 7.1, became distracted by CNN's trying to sell me a Free Live Fish, hook line & sinker, to see a clip.

(Now I must discover how 7.1 functions, if it does - sans anything but the unremovable-stub of IE - on someone Else's expendable box.)
I know, try it out on the dog's laptop.
If it's OK a week later ...

I Hate "trying these pigs-in-poke" by actually Installing them; allowing them to rummage barefoot through My. Registry! Especially after 4.3 years on this install.
