Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Ngah. Why do I do this to myself?
I had a working Win2K installation, used for a p2p camera app (for talking with my folks) and a music studio program (FL Studio).

I decided things would be better on XP.

Do the upgrade, everything looks ok... until it asks for viaide.sys. Buh? Then I remember that I had installed special VIA drivers for the mobo. Why it couldn't find them as part of the upgrade I'll never know, especially since exactly the same drivers are used for both 2K and XP. So I track them down, XP goes on with life.

Until it reboots after the install is finished.

BSOD, half a second into boot. Safe mode, no go. Ditto repair prompt.

So I start over again.

This time I d/l new drivers and put them on a CD to use. Same drivers, mind you, just a different install media. Give them to XP when it asks.

Reboot after install, and everything is peachy. WTF?

Oh, and nice background music during the 3 page "setup" wizard. Concentrate on the important things, natch.

On the other side of things, about twice a month the Mac goes into super slo-mode. The UI becomes unresponsive in 30 second spurts. Only a reboot cures this. *sigh* I hate computers.

New Know the feeling.
I have a Win2k + SP4 box at work that was running great. It controls some equipment through a multifunction A/D+D/A PCI I/O board. A few weeks ago I noticed that there were some Windows Update fixes that were out. Those things always make me nervous, but we have to keep our systems updated, so ...

I installed the new Windows Update.

I went through the Custom mode and did only the essentials (not .NET, not Direct X 9).

Reboot and things seemed to be OK, other than some serial number issues....

But now Norton Antivirus Corporate's icon on the status bar (or whatever it's called) always indicates that the Realtime Protection is disabled. Reenabling it only lasts about a second. And the critical application that controls the equipment (custom written in Delphi by a colleague) gets into a mode where something that used to happen instantaneously when a checkbox was selected now happens in ~ instantly to ~ 30 s later. :-( Some other software that controls some other equipment won't start at all (it won't connect to its database).

I've tried various diagnostics (MemTest86 on a MEPIS CD ran through all tests in ~ 4.5 hours with no errors; CHKDSK said there was a problem on the NTFS partition with the swap file and fixed it on the next reboot - there were no bad sectors; Norton's WinDoctor fixed some minor issues in the registry), but nothing's helped. In fact the problem is worse now - Explorer.exe crashes and restarts whenever I click on the Start button.

I can't run Windows Update again because IE (the latest version) hangs when it tries to access the internet. Mozilla works fine.

I redownloaded IE 6 and reinstalled it, but the behavior is the same.

It seems to run MEPIS fine from the CD, so it seems to be a Windows software issue. Just to be safe I backed up the partitions on the SCSI boot disk to a 300 GB Seagate IDE.

Others have had problems with NAV and Norton Utilities, but they've generally been fine for me before. Running NAV (with the latest virus definitions) from a Safe Mode boot found no viruses. SBS&D didn't find any problems either. Of course, that's not proof that there isn't an infection, but it doesn't act like it. Symantec Antivirus 10 won't install because the Windows Installer hangs.

What's really annoying is that at least 3 other PCs that have gone through the same Windows Update procedure haven't had these problems. :-( I haven't seen much of anything on the 'net about problems like this, but I haven't looked much either.

Something's messed up pretty badly. I'll probably reinstall Win2k+SP2 and then reinstall SP4, tomorrow. (I love spending my days off fixing things like this...) I'll need to go through the Windows Update rigamarole too - with luck I won't have any further issues, but I don't have a good feeling. :-(

I hope I don't have to wipe the boot partition to fix this problem...

I also hope that some unremovable virus isn't buried in there somewhere. It's not used for e-mail, it's not used for much web stuff, NAV was always updated and active, but some directories are shared through the Windows networking to others in our workgroup. Andrew's stories always give me the whillies. :-(

I too hate computers sometimes.

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who still dreads trying to get KnoppMyth running in a usable state on one of his other home machines but wants to be able to record and time shift shows so he'll have to take that leap too...)
New Synchronicity...
I am currently downloading Knoppmyth 5A16 to put on my PVR machine tonight. :-D

While PVRs are interesting, there simply isn't enough television that's worth watching to justify the effort and/or expenditure.

New We're taping educational shows.
Otherwise I'd agree. Although there is Samurai Jack...

New "educational", eh?
That'd be the part of the cable subscription you don't tell SWMBO about.

New Yes, it's Java's fault.
I'll bet some of you just knew that Java had something to do with it, didn't you...

The computer with the slowdown issues is on an APC UPS. It uses Java software to control the graceful shutdown. Guess what? APC's Java Runtime Certificate expired on July 27, 2005 for this version of the software.

Bottom line, if you're running APC's PowerChute Business Edition software v6.x, you need to upgrade to the latest version (7.0.4).

More [link|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=7202|here].

Of course, I was 90% through reinstalling and reconfiguring things before I found this out...

:-(

HTH someone else out there.

Cheers,
Scott.
New And it gets worse
Yup, just had this problem at a client on their Exchange server. Took half an hour for the login process, then many things were slooooooooooooooow.

I identified the problem from an internet search and disabled the APC service and everything worked fine on reboot. So I set about deinstalling the APC software.

During the deinstall it TWICE shut off power to the servers, BANG! (this was a BIG unit with three small servers on it), then turned it right back on.

The sudden shutdowns damaged the Oracle database for their main MRP/Accounting software requiring thousands of dollars expense and downtime to put them back in business.

Fortunately their in-house support guy was watching over my sholder when the UPS shut off power so I didn't get blamed for doing something wrong.

Anyway, I have even less warm fuzzys about APC than I did before.

New :-(
New Well, it wasn't all bad for me.
A year ago their $16,000 Dell horked the RAID array on the second channel causing "significant data problems". I tossed together a little Athlon box with two 80-Gig drives in a couple of hours and the software guy flew out from Florida to get them back up. They've been running on that temp server ever since.

I built them a dual Xeon with two RAID arrays, redundant power and the works. Big box on wheels. It sat in my living room for nearly a year because I knew what a hassle it would be dealing with the software vendor.

Since stuff had to be rebuilt anyway it was a perfect time to deliver that server and get the system up on it. Finally got to invoice that sucker. Of course it runs circles around that Dell for 1/3 the price.

New I worked with APC's UPS software briefly.
The one thing that I objected most to was that it assumes the server it's installed on is on the UPS it's controlling. That just ain't necessarily so...

Wade.
d-_-b
New Can you spell "DRM"? Sure, I knew you could.
What happens when APC goes out of business? All their stuff is time-bombed. Doesn't matter how perfect it may be, if it can't find a valid certificate anywhere you're screwed.

Much better then the "real" ones.
