New bass-ackward
Reread: Fiji first.
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.
New now not to be CRC or nuttin but
Early October if it happens, and four nights in Sydney following four in Aukland and four in Fiji
would seem that Following Sydney you have 4 nites in NZ and (hopefully followed by) four in Figi. In any case not enough time for all but a very enjoyable schedule.
thanx,
bill

New There's a comma missing, you see.
If he'd have said " four nights in Sydney, following four in Aukland and four in Fiji" then the itinerary is Sydney *then* Auckland *then* Fiji.

However he posted "four nights in Sydney following four in Aukland and four in Fiji" which means the itinerary is Fiji and Auckland in some other *then* Sydney.

New Nope, the comma makes not one whit of difference.
Both variants, with or without the comma, mean exactly what Rand intended them too: That the four nights in Sydney ARE FOLLOWING -- i.e, _A_F_T_E_R_ -- some other nights elsewhere.

THe only way to change that into its opposite is, not by inserting or removing commas, but changing "following" to *its* opposite: "Four nights in Sydney[,] *follwed by* some other nights elsewhere".

HTH!

Your lies are of Microsoftian Scale and boring to boot. Your 'depression' may be the closest you ever come to recognizing truth: you have no 'inferiority complex', you are inferior - and something inside you recognizes this. - [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=71575|Ashton Brown]
New You're right, and you're wrong
Here's the original sentence:
Early October if it happens, and four nights in Sydney following four in Aukland and four in Fiji.

"And" binds closer than "following", so the sentence parses:
[...]four nights in Sydney following (four in Aukland and four in Fiji).
which means the stated (which may be different than intended) itinerary is:

Auckland, then Fiji, then Sydney

And yes, the proposed insertion of a comma doesn't matter.

And why the hell do we even care? Rand has scheduled one helluva trip, I'm envious, and I hope he and the SO have a wonderful time!
jb4
shrub●bish (Am., from shrub + rubbish, after the derisive name for America's 43 president; 2003) n. 1. a form of nonsensical political doubletalk wherein the speaker attempts to defend the indefensible by lying, obfuscation, or otherwise misstating the facts; GIBBERISH. 2. any of a collection of utterances from America's putative 43rd president. cf. BULLSHIT

New Look at the evidence.
Other people on the board read it as Sydney first. Thus, to some people, your interpretation is incorrect. I actually found it ambiguous.

However, I omitted to say that the comma can introduce an implied "the" in the first variation, altering the meaning to what I have already posted.

I know you have a well-deserved reputation for being a stickler for and being highly knowledgeable about English grammer (despite it not being your first language), but in this case I believe you are mistaken. Particularly as English is *my* first language and studying how it works and how it has developed has always interested me.

Wade.

New If English is your first language...
...then you should learn to spell "grammar".

Grammer sits on the porch, sucking her teeth and reminiscing about the war.

Edit: Oh, and CRC's 100% correct, BTW.

New Hmmm
"four nights in Sydney, following [four in Aukland and four in Fiji]"

But there is ambiguity IMhO:
We don't know if it's c + [b + a] or: c + [a + b]
The[] could as easily connote 1) Aukland 2) Fiji as, vice versa.

We are meant to infer that all is in reverse order.
"four nights in Sydney, as follow four in Aukland, which followed four in Fiji"

Maybe (other than stating 1-2-3)
"four nights in Sydney, following four in Aukland; this after initial four in Fiji"
Is that the least ambiguous?

But generally -

Poor neglected ';'
Useful as a [comma and \ufffd]? = just short-of a full-stop [.]
When context is clear - these need not be the formulaic clauses, either (ie with subject and predicate): the subject is most often evident. Speech has metre! D'Oh.

We are indicating ... {pauses} ...
Why can we not better signify l e n g t h ?

(Note how we exaggerate Pause-length - when speaking with children or MBAs;
this is not only to give them more time to pattern-match in their nascent caches (or for latter - TLA-damaged caches.)
It's for Emphasis sometimes.
and separation, if there are say, three related thoughtlets in a sentence.)

Our punctuation rules are primordial. Speech gives all sorts of clues about meaning, which rote use of hoary punctuation rulez elides. No such options were practical with hot-lead type and the labor to set each tiny blotch.

I shall attempt to carry the Guidon for Victor Borge's excellent musical burlesque -- illustrating these deficiencies by zany exaggeration.
Yet Another Treasure gone, recently.

RIP Victor...

New I was imprecise.
Fiji. Then Aukland. Then Sydney. The anguish of being called on this by boxley is hard cheese indeed, but I will bear it bravely.

With the retrieval of my passport, which I had prudently decided to renew in advance of its scheduled lapse in January—my horror at finding the $67 check to the State Department still clinging to its microperforations a week later as I prepared to write out the mortgage payment, to say nothing of my wailing and self-laceration, may be readily imagined—kindly returned with a starchy note by the Passport Agency after just ten days away, the odds are looking better. If it's to happen (a couple of other elements need to align just so), I'll know it by a week from now.

cordially,
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.
New any direction, have a wonderful trip
