Welcome to IWETHEY!

New They're not doing *that* badly - comparable to Andrew.
[link|http://www.ndu.edu/library/ic6/93S49.pdf|Lt. Col. Mangual Report] (43 page .pdf):

p.18 of the .pdf
Four days after Hurricane Andrew's assault on Southern Florida, the largest-ever peacetime military operation began. The cleanup operation involved over 24,000 U.S. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Canadian Forces deployed to Florida in the largest peacetime CONUS deployment ever.

The Katrina came ashore near New Orleans on Monday August 29 - 3.5 days ago. I've heard mention of 30,000 NG troops committed so far, IIRC.

It takes time to decide what needs to be done by whom and in what order. Everyone rushing in without sufficient planning only makes things worse. (Note that I'm not arguing that things can't and shouldn't be improved.)

Also, what I see on the website doesn't much match what the reporters in the field are seeing and they are pissed.

Yeah, well one has to expect a bit of rah-rah from an official DOD site. I try to separate the facts from the presentation when reading things like that. It's hard to know how much of the annecdotal stuff is representative. I'm sure it's terrible down there - we just don't to what extent the reports of looting, shootings, etc., are a reflection of the overall situation.

We'll know more in a few days. :-(

Cheers,
Scott.
New But I want to know now!
Lotsa pissed off people. But I can't help but think that we have expectations that somehow a regional disaster of this magnitude will be resolved in a matter of minutes or days. Within a week or two, we'll probably still be talking about these early days and our perceptions will be coloured, but the longer term challenge will be even more daunting.

As an aside, Amy says the talk at the PTA meeting tonight was of an influx of 10,000 kids into our Richardson school district. Amy and I are mulling over our own personal response at the moment. No way an individual(s) can approach anything amounting to a solution. But just worrying by itself seems to be counter-productive.
New I'm sure it'll be challenging for a long time. :-( Luck!
