Either way, that sucks. It sounded like you were enjoying the place. Good luck.

New I'm set up to fail
moved under a guy with a totally different style/priorities. I don't see this working out so I'm looking elsewhere within and beyond the co. If I stick around I suspect I'll eventually be removed due to "attitude problems" or something.

New Sucks
Sorry.
In what ways are you different?
Is he stupid enough to be antagonistic early on?
Have you already butt heads in previous ways (cross dept fighting?)
Is he a corp climber or a overreaching grey beard?
New I no longer buy into management fad of the month
he has his direct reports read the latest bs mgt tome and then discuss it after hours. (This month is Joel Spolsky's latest package of old blog postings - an individual I view as not particularly insightful, yet a tireless self promoter). Couple rules I've developed include only reading things I find useful and not working outside of work hours unnecessarily.

I suppose I could simply refuse to play, but that makes me a contrarian in the team and can't be good for the team spirit. So I don't fit.

There are other issues involving deep architectural issues and dev priorities.

New Stick it out as long as you need to
Yeah, I know that it can suck being in a position like that. But try to be polite about his idiocy, and try not to provoke an incident that will result in your leaving until after you have another job lined up.

Cheers,
Ben

PS I share your attitude about Joel about 70-80% of the time. But occasionally he sends a dart in the right general direction.

New :-)
New On the cheese book
SWMBO got a copy for nowt from somewhere. I tried to read it, but the writer just never got around to making any kind of point, although there was an awful lot of "why I wrote this book", aka "padding". Utterly pointless.

After a couple of chapters, I went back to The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul.

New Speaking of Joel
Cincom has a comment about [link|http://www.cincomsmalltalk.com/blog/blogView?showComments=true&entry=3301840809|Joel's BDUF methodology]. :-)
New :-D
New Exactly, but as with much about Joel...
his misunderstandings are understandable.

Many of them are shaped by his experience at Microsoft. Which mostly means that he misunderstands many things in a Microsoft-centric way. But it sometimes means other things. For example at Microsoft his job, back when he was technical, was to produce design specs for Microsoft Excel. Having had the job of producing a big design up front, he is going to have a certain emotional commitment to the idea that this is a worthwhile thing to do.

To be fair, big design up front clearly was the right thing to do for a company like Microsoft which was shipping shrinkwrap and had large costs for each new rev that they put out. The idea of a weekly rev with incremental feedback would have simply not worked.

However the barrier that you have is that people usually can't really tell how much they like something before they see it in action. Which is why fast prototypes and incremental development help design out.

Cheers,
Ben

Good luck, I'll keep my eyes open. Forward me your CV, and I'll throw it around.

New Look on the bright side
Look on the bright side, the job market is probably the best know it has been any time since 2000. When I put my resume out earlier this year I had recruiters calling me out of the blue. Hopefully the market is equally good where you are looking.

Still, changing jobs sucks when you like the job you had.

New oh Todd- I cant believe it!
This isnt supposed to be happening! WTF happened?

I'm going to Muskegon today for the weekend. Check your home email
New well hope tech in that area is hiring,

New That's a little misleading.
I read your post to mean you'd been laid off or fired, not that you've merely got a manager you don't much like.

That sucks too, mind, but not nearly as much as what I thought had occurred, based on your post.

New Hey, my boss takes care of me
I take care of him.

I figure I have a direct responsibility to the company.
I make them money, they pay me.

I have also have an interest in keeping my boss happy.
As long has his behaviour is not in direct contradiction to the company doing well, I support him.
I will not argue in public (unless he tells me to), but I'll rip him a new asshole in private if I think he needs it.

But my job it to make him look good, as long as it is not in contradiction to the company doing well. Pretty simple.

If there comes a time I determine it is no longer in the company's best interest to support him, I'll throw him to the wolves. But I don't see that happening. He is both way too smart and way too ethical to cross that line.
New I don't think our definitions match
I wouldn't call that rump licking politiking, it's operating in your corporate culture with savvy, couth, and wisdom. Throw some accountability in there for good measure.

An ass kisser would NEVER give his boss an ass reaming, no matter how bad he needed it. Except maybe on the day he got fired.

New Think so?
I've been fired three times in my career - most recently from cheap bastards. I'm getting good at spotting the environment in which I cannot swim for long and this one smells like that.
