New Anyone know of a dot-matrix to text driver?
We've got a legacy system that produces reports that are dumped directly to dot-matrix printers. We have a way to capture the print file, which is mostly plain text, but includes some printer control codes. We'd like to store these files as .txt files minus the control codes. If we can preserve the formatting that the control codes provide, fine, but we don't need it. Just something that will be readable in a browser.

Anyone heard of a utility for this?

New maybe this?
[link|http://www.alphatronics.net/AVPMon.html|Virtual Port Monitor]
With Virtual Port Monitor, you can capture printer output that would normally go to a communications port such as LPT1. Useful for second stage processing such as creating PDF files, ripping, or simple distribution of printer output.

or this

With Serial Port Monitor, you can capture binary data from the computers serial port, and with the use of a serial to parallel converter, you can capture the data from the printer port of another device. It is useful in capturing data from devices that do not have the ability to "print to file".

New We already have the prn file captured
I haven't looked at the file yet, but the guy who works on the old system says it will have printer codes in it. We may open them up and find that they look just fine, I won't know until I try. But I'm expecting to have to do some cleanup.

Thanks for the pointer, in any case.

New Aren't you a Linux nut? Pipe 'em through sed.
New Not my system, no Linux in sight

New FTP or e-mail to an out-of-sight one?
Otherwise, build a simple Word-Basic (or "Visual Basic for Applications" nowadays macro to do the same thing(s) in MS Word.

Seriously; I don't think there's too many codes there(*), so you probably could look them up in the printer manual and write that utility "by hand" in some such way. Or "Cygwin", perhaps, to get sed on the Winders box?

(*): I only used a very very few back when I wrote stuff that wrote stuff like that, for example.

New Once we're talking VB-anything, we're past what I care to do
Someone else can figure this one out. I know in the Unix world this is easy. If they don't know how to do it ... well, it's not my problem.

New Mobius Management Corp

does this for living. I used to work for them, wrote a piece to do something similar to what you need with PCL. Escaped after ~ 8 months.

Check them out...
