New Time for decisions
In the last 24 hours I've gone from uncertainty over my job future to having two job offers, and I can't decide which way to go. Both jobs offer about the same salary and benefits.

Offer 1 is with the company that will be absorbing the remnents of the company I work for now. The upside is that I know what I'll be getting into there, the downside is that I know what I'll be getting into. It's not a bad work environment (once the current situation passes) but neither is it a good one. I generally like the people I work with, but I'll be facing a large number of small, poorly managed projects.

Offer 2 is with a company that makes software for construction companies. It's a larger and more stable company, and I'll be largly working on one package. But I'll be facing the large uncertainty of moving into a new workplace. I know what they said about the company at the interview, and their website looks good. But I know there are big limitations on how far you can trust those things.

And I really need to make my decision today. I'm leaning towards making the jump to offer 2. The idea of a larger and more stable working environment appeals to me right now. But I'm worried that I'm over compensating for the current problems caused by the divorce, which I know will pass at some point. On the other hand, I don't know when those problems will pass, and I can see that they could linger on for quite some time.

New Make a clean break.
Cut bait from #1, move to the next fishin' hole.

Look at #2 as a new adventure. You will probably be more productive because of the freshness of the work environment. You will feel better about yourself and you will have created a new skill set.

New Hey, jump on #2. And, a quick (for me) question.
Which Company are we talking about, I am very familiar with about 3 well done packages for Construction companies that handles project, Estimates, time spent, materials lists etc... and handling fire/flood/tree damage restoration through Insurance companies too.

I really like one, mainly because the support is fab and quality is what they care about.

I pretty much like a second one, as they "get it" when it comes to understanding Multi platform clients, there by allowing the companies to run Windows, MAC, Linux, FreeBSD etc...

The most popular one, is very well done on the user side of things (which is what really matters) But, the server side is just plain ICKY. But, that hasn't slowed them down. The interface is very nice, but I don't like the support they give. It is a list of pre-done answers, then escalate, pre-made answers, escalate, pre-made answers, escalate to the Programmers... and never get a resolution or response that it is fixed in XX.XX version. I just install the 2 monthly update for the customer, voila the problem disappears.

The only thing I have to say, make sure you either don;t screw up the 2 I prefer, or Improve the support at the third one.

either way, make sure you have fun. That is really important.

I won't be working on the general construction part of their system, I'll be working on the homebuilder part.

Platform wise they are on a mix of iSeries and Microsoft with an eventual view of moving everything to .NET.

New Choice Solidified.
You should go there, period, regardless of your preference for your friends (thought enemies right now though).

That is the software publisher I prefer.

New Good
I made the commitment to take the job today. Good to know they actually have good software. Or at least the construction side does. My first project will be taking a piece of the homebuilder software that TSC doesn't conisder up to snuff and cleaning it up.

New Home Building in the New Job...
...Home Wrecking in the Last One. :-)
New Decent choice - do it!
New Hmmm...the devil you know vs. the devil you don't....
Seems to me that answer is to be based on whether you consider yourself an "adventurer" or whether you're a "coocooner". If you're the former take #2, if you're the latter, take #1. since I don't know you (that well, anyway), I can't tell you anything more than that. But since you state you're leaning toward #2, it seems you're more of an "adventurer" so go with your gut.

And good luck, whichever you choose.
