New Windows 2k/XP + NDS question
So, I'm learning about the configuration here at the college, and local machine logins are done this way:

(XP or 2K, doesn't matter)

Create local user account for individual user, leave password blank.
Have user log into Novell, change user name for local machine to user's name.

If user wants to log into a different workstation, a local account has to be created for them on that machine as well.

Is the bullshit between Microsoft and Novell that screwed up?
apt-get install godlike-powers
New Sounds like crap to me...
...but Greg'll tell you better than me. It's been a long, long time.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New No, it's not.
Novell have for some time had a whizz-bang NDS client that integrates very well with Windows. You login to the Novell login and it logs you into Windows, too. Local accounts are created automagically and as-needed. Windows administration rights can be assigned to NDS users. You can even login locally, if you have to, without the NDS login, though that needs a real local account, and you can do the NDS half separately afterwards, without logging out of Windows first.

The only reason for the god-awful scheme you described is because someone Just Hasn't Made It Work.

New That is bullshit.
Roaming Profiles in M$ == Zen Profiles in Novell.

Since you are an education account you should be able to get ZEN for pennies.

Go get ZEN and be happy.

Profiles DON'T have to even *BE* created either. When a Student logs in, you can force a default profile and personalize it with a "homedir" which all setting and junk are kept rather than c:\\Docs-n-settings\\blah\\blah\\blah

Or another way is to keep all per user stuffs (docs and IE cache and firefox cache etc), in a HOMEDIR and actually use roaming profiles period. Many forced settings are easy to accomplish with ZEN (or NAL as it was called).

NAL is not a bear to tangle with, once you "get" its functionality you can rollout whole labs without even having a tech be there. Just have the local College Work Study restart the computers. *IF* you have PXE capable and/or setup... golden are you.

PXE allows you to "maintain" machines without tech interaction.

MUCH MUCH MUCH has to be done to statr with, but remember this, NAL/ZEN builds upon what you already have existing. It can change/mold your setup if you grok it.

New Figured as much.
Thanks, guys. Was wondering what kind of total mess I was getting myself into; not that it really matters since we're migrating to LDAP pretty soon anyways.
apt-get install godlike-powers
New They'll screw that up as well.

New No no no no no
If the current people couldn't get their system set up right, it's because the system sucked. They just need to buy a new one and learn how to use that.

New You guys are really making me feel good about my new job. :P
New No... you just wait until it hits you.
I know. remember, I used to have a job @ a CC.

Just wait, when the CAD (Not Computer Aided Drafting ... NOOOOO) Computer Applications Department decides it wants to do something that needlessly compromises you department's (IT) ability to quell the burning fires, buying a outside of budget (or Granted) package that requires ADS, you just love it. Trust me. It *IS* going to happen.

They won't accept a NO, that would be invading the Fiefdom(sp?) they have there.

But, you guys get to pick up the pieces, trying to make it work.

New You're supposed to let me get disillusioned myself. :D
New Oh, I'm doing that
I may offer assistance, but you're the one who has to do the disillusioning. :-P

Cheers,
Ben

New Simpler explanation.
A friend is running Netware 4.11. They do not have the funds to upgrade to a newer version. Netware 4.11 does not work with XP, and is no longer supported by Novell.
apt-get install godlike-powers
New BONK>>>>>>
Wrong Answer.

4.11 is not supported by Novell, correct.

XP does work and so does W2K. You just need to either use the Netware Client (ver 2.61 or later preferrably much newer) or the NDS Client from Microsoft.

Login scripts and everything work just fine.

Also, the best way to keep Novell happy is to continue to buy Upgrade protection. Cheap effective, about 1/3 the "upgrade costs" It also allows you to get Premium Support as an EDU for CHEAP.

Netware 4.11 was the first in amajor change the way Novell played with Windows. Just get a Client update and watch it work well.

New Double BONK!!!
Netware 4.11 does not work with XP, and is no longer supported by Novell.

Really......

Then I can't possibly be doing what I think I'm doing with 2 XP machines on my NW 4.11 network. It's all an illusion?

Thanks for clearing that up.....
