War of the Worlds
Wife and I saw it yesterday It was her idea despite the aliens and explosions We both enjoyed it thoroughly
We are also mystified by the bad reviews in some quarters. Don't really see what 9/11 has to with it or if it is somehow related what difference that could make w/ the quality of the movie
Tom Cruise makes a good divorced father who really shouldn't be watching the kids for the weekend Dakota Fanning is terrific as his daughter Tim Robbins is very creepy as the creepy guy
Top grade

Mick laSalle sez
[image|http://sfgate.com/templates/types/entertainment/graphics/littleman/5.0.gif||||] [link|http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/06/29/DDGDMDFVCU18.DTL&hw=Mick+LaSalle+War+of+the+Worlds&sn=005&sc=470| SFGate] It's hard to imagine a better movie called "War of the Worlds" than this latest from Steven Spielberg. It is, simply, the alienation-invasion movie to beat all alien-invasion movies: meticulously detailed and expertly paced and photographed, with sights so spectacular and terrible that viewers will have to consciously remind themselves to close their mouths when their jaws drop open.

It was uneven at best
Minor spoiler alert. I am not giving away anything critical to the plot, only minor details that annoyed me.
Overall it is good. But it is inconsistent. It careens between very good and very bad. It is certainly a welcome change from stories of good old human ingenuity saving the day. But there are glaring inconsistencies. For instance all electrical equipment has been destroyed and there is a working camcorder?? After several days of wholesale destruction, there is an untouched neighbourhood at the end?? After several days of people being killed, particularly in large groups, people are still gathering in large groups??
But if you ignore details like that, it is enjoyable.
Cheers, Ben

Sounds like typical Spielberg. :-/

But is it art?
Whenever I see the trailers, I think "yet another angst ridden, special effects driven adrenaline rush with puerile storyline and one dimensional characters". One of the reviews here mentions escapism and that, to me, is another black mark. I prefer insight and not too much suspension of disbelief.
Would I get anything out of this?

It fits you, actually
The theme of half the movie is, Run! Get out while you can!

'Nother amateur review (spoiler alert)
[link|http://forums.sjgames.com/showpost.php?p=89532&postcount=1|http://forums.sjgame...89532&postcount=1] Tom Cruise plays Mr. Cool. At least that's how I saw him and really don't care to remember the actual name of the character.
Mr. Cool works as a dockloader in NYC and is your typical 'cool' person: He's good looking, rude, sellfish and gives uncool people the brushoff. It's OK, tho, other people in the movie exist to be uncool and thus it's OK for cool people to brush them off.
He also makes some anti-union cracks, which I would not expect from a real dockworker, but given that cruise and spielberg are millionaires I guess union bashing seems perfectly normal to them.

Go on...
Could you expand your statement, such as what, in particular, the reviewer is delusional about? I ponder reviews and trailers carefully before watching a film.

... the ratio of sarcasm to sincerity in that last line.

No sarcasm here
Despite drewk's doubts, I don't do subtle sarcasm. I really would like andread to expand his comments. ben_tilly's message would be an example. I would like to know if Hollywood can rehash a sci-fi story without wrecking it for excessive angst and adrenal pumping.

Re: Go on...
The 'reviewer' must be referring to the opening scenes Tom C is dying to leave work and get home His boss wants him to work more Tom blows him off and claims protection from the boss from his union rules His boss is uncool and Tom does blow him off but he doesn't dis unions in any way and is merely trying to go home how this matches the 'reviewer' is beyond me

What anti-union cracks?
He's shown using union rules to give his boss a brush-off when his boss is asking him to work overtime that he doesn't want to work because he needs to spend time with his kids.
I'd actually call that a pro-union incident.
