A little lesson from life: my professional responsibilities involve me in dealing now and again with the uniformed personnel of the former "U.S. Customs Service," lately chopped up and reconstituted as "Customs and Border Protection." This attentive officer said, without apparent irony, "Keeping the dream alive. Yeah, that's right," and one of his companions, a female, assented. The third said nothing, and contrived to linger in my office after his companions had left. "That's Felix Dzerzhinsky, isn't it?" he demanded. "Y-e-e-s," I responded cautiously. "Gawd," he hissed, "what a couple of clowns." Made my day.
