Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Seeing an odd problem with W2K/networking
I work the helpdesk for a ton of remote users at my company and have seen something quite odd lately. On Windows 2000 Pro with latest service packs/patches I've had three users in the last two weeks reporting no internet connectivity. (some have both wired and wireless and both show the same symptoms)

I've verifed that TCP/IP settings are as they should be, I've tried ipconfig /release /renew /flushdns /registerdns, I've removed and reinstalled the TCP/IP protocol, I've removed and reinstalled the NIC drivers. I've had them check with their ISPs for anything new. I've run several anti-spyware progs and our company approved anti-virus. I've power cycled all components in the chain to the internet. Nothing works. I tell the user I need to consult with some of the other help desk agents for ideas and within a few hours I will get a message that they are now able to connect.

Then in a few hours or, at most, a day they will call back and the problem has returned. A couple of times the problem went away while I was on the phone with them. The problem is that at the time it returned, I was wracking my brain for something else to try since the last thing I did failed.

I would suspect a hardware failure of some kind if it hadn't occured in this limited time frame to multiple users. Therefore, I am strongly suspicious that there is some new spyware/virus/exploit that hasne't yet been identified as the cause of this. Googling doesn't show me anything on this and I have reasonably good Google-fu.

I appeal to the IWETHEY group mind for help.

New I saw the same symptoms recently.
Connections from my Win2k PC to the net were OK part of the time, but slow. Windows file sharing was glacial to or from the box. Printing to a local Lexmark TCP/IP printer would fail.

But it was only my office. A D-Link DSS-5+ 10/100 switch on my desk was apparently crapping out. I replaced it with a Netgear FS105 and the problems went away.

Are the users on the same subnet sharing a router or switch somewhere? Have you tried a different DNS? [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=202375|Greg's ] seem to work pretty well.

I don't know of any virus/spyware that would cause those symptoms, but I haven't kept up with such things as much as I probably should.

HTH. Luck!

Cheers,
Scott.

New Dunno. It sounds like you've checked most everything.
Just in case, I assume you've been through [link|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/102908/|this] page at MS's site.

Hey, it's Winders. Sometimes that's just the way it is. The code wears out and sometimes you just have to buy a new system.

Or something. ;-)

Luck!

Cheers,
Scott.

New I've seen it before
Singularly unhelpfull in most cases.

It did make me think of something else to look at though. I need to check the lmhosts file to make sure nothing "uninvited" has ended up in it.

New Static or dynamic IP addresses?
Is it possible that there is an IP address onflict somewhere?
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail ... but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Damn...that was fun!"
New Dynamic
Both IP and DHCP are set to automatic

New Any chance it's an IPv4/IPv6 issue of some kind?
Could IPv4 to IPv6 translation or vice versa translation go awry?

Just a random thought here.

New Huh?
What is IE supposed to be doing that it would interfere this way? Is it written up anywhere?

shrub\ufffdbish (Am., from shrub + rubbish, after the derisive name for America's 43 president; 2003) n. 1. a form of nonsensical political doubletalk wherein the speaker attempts to defend the indefensible by lying, obfuscation, or otherwise misstating the facts; GIBBERISH. 2. any of a collection of utterances from America's putative 43rd president. cf. BULLSHIT

New Follow up
The initial report was misleading. The others who have seen this (up to 7 now in approx 300 systems in my supported group of laptop users) all were supplied with Swell Fatitude* D600's. It appears now that the NIC chipset on the MB has a weakness that may cause a failure. This has only occured with system over 3 years old. this is, coincidentally, the term of the standard warrenty Big surprise, we paid for the extended and have an extra year of onsite service.

Swell* field tech support for us has been very good. Something to keep in mind even though It cannot be compared to retail owner's support in any way.

When I have my users call Swell*, I do a conferance call more often than not and explain what I have already done to troubleshoot. Usually they put in the call to send a tech before the end of our phone call.

Ain't troubleshooting fun?

FYI, I've also seen the hard drive and LCD screen on this model fail much too often.

New This sounds familiar.
I supported hardware from That Vendor in a recent job. Laptops from them age particularly poorly. And quickly. I can think of three other brands that age much better.
