Why Does Firefox
ask you to make Firefox your hoempage everytime you install an upgrade and why is it losing the battle against pop-ups

Can't remember the last time I got a pop-up with Firefox.
Can't remember the first time, either.
Can't remember anytime I've gotten a pop-up, period.

It's rare, but it happens.

I've seen them for a few months.
The first was followed by no others for quite a while so I'm not entirely sure but I think it happened around October of last year. In the last month I think I've seen about five.

Blame Flash
Advertisers, or nerds on their behalf, figured out how to get Flash to pop up ads, bypassing the usual HMTL/Javascript checks that browers can do.

I pop in at DR ~ 1x a day. I never get popups.
I'm using Mozilla 1.7x and Firefox 1.0.4. I also use [link|http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html|Spybot Search and Destroy] and am "Immunized" by it. Maybe you need something like that too?
Hope you get it figured out.
Cheers, Scott.

Spoke too soon.
I just dropped by there (to see the headlines) and immediately got 4 popups from cruiseflorida.com
Nasty. :-(
I'm using Adblock v0.5d2 Nightly build 39 and Firefox 1.0.4. I'll have to see what else is available...
Cheers, Scott.

Flashblock extension
[link|https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&category=Web%20Annoyances&numpg=10&id=433|Flashblock] Replaces Flash objects with a button you can click to view them. I've been using it for a few days and like it.

silence is golden
While I installed this to stop the last of the pop-ups, I'm really appreciating the disappearance of those noisy ads.

Newer version
Firefox started crashing on occasion when accessing [link|http://macslash.org|MacSlash]. I don't hit that site often, so it took a bit to figure out that it was most likely crashing due to Flashblock.
The extensions site has version 1.2.9. I found the main site for [link|http://flashblock.mozdev.org/index.html|Flashblock] and they have version 1.3.1. After installing that, the problems at MacSlash appear to have cleared up.
NOTE - you can't just upgrade Flashblock. Follow the [link|http://flashblock.mozdev.org/uninstall.html|uninstall process] and then install the new version.

Interesting. Haven't seen any evidence of this in OS/2.
And I have one Windoze machine using Mozilla 1.7.3 that I'm not seeing it on.
Anybody got a site that consistantly does this?

I don't have any Flash plugin loaded for either Mozilla or Firefox.

No popups
Nice little popup-blocker icon comes up down in the corner to tell me it blocked stuff, but nothing gets through.
