New Tierney OpEd on coverage of suicide bombers.
[link|http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/10/opinion/10tierney.html?hp&oref=login|NYTimes]:

If a man-bites-dog story is news and dog-bites-man isn't, why are journalists still so interested in man-blows-up-self stories?

I realize that we have a duty to report suicide bombings in the Middle East, especially when there's a spate as bad as in recent weeks. And I know the old rule of television news: if it bleeds, it leads. But I'm still puzzled by our zeal in frantically competing to get gruesome pictures and details for broadcasts and front pages.

Good questions.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Could it be...
that we have invested 100s of billions in
'securing' Iraq and it is totally insecure

That is reality

Also I don't think that suicide bombers
spend any time reading about their exploits

If we were to follow Tierney all it would
do is make the American public less informed
It wouldn't change the situation in Iraq

more twaddle from the right

New Actually, there's a good question going begging there:
What if somebody blew him/herself up, and nobody cared? How much more/less likely would it be that the next besotted "martyr-wannabe" would blow him/herself up?

shrub\ufffdbish (Am., from shrub + rubbish, after the derisive name for America's 43 president; 2003) n. 1. a form of nonsensical political doubletalk wherein the speaker attempts to defend the indefensible by lying, obfuscation, or otherwise misstating the facts; GIBBERISH. 2. any of a collection of utterances from America's putative 43rd president. cf. BULLSHIT

New Hardly anyone cares if they blow themselves up
however many care about those that they take with them

New I thought it was news because American were dying....
and I thought Americans were interested in that sort of thing.

Of course, Kurtz might be right about that too. Do we as Americans care if our troops are out there dying?

And is it even news anymore?
New It is not news
Any more than, "The sky is blue!" or "The Sun is shining!"

News should be events that carry some level of surprise. This is an expected event. The places change. The number of dead change. But the fact that Americans continue to die for this President's mistakes is not news.

Cheers,
Ben

New Then you're wrong. I'm (unfortunately) completely serious.

New Individual coverage of a blast is not "the news". The news
is the acceleration of such events. That is neither, 'the sky is blue' (again) nor ho-hum - it is a factoid to be folded in with whatever else one can glean, as indicates "how It is going over there" - where so many $B / and US at-risk persons are temporarily-?? residing.

I believe that the (expected) Red-State mindset wants ALL negative reports to disappear, and that is the crux of the intended maligning of these messengers. Could that be other than obvious?
