I have know idea about USB support under Linux, especially under such an old distro. USB CD-ROM support is discussed [link|http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/x498.html|here]. I don't imagine the writing aspects would be too different, but you do have to tell the drive that you're done (unlike a HD, etc.).

I'd imagine USB would be the more universal interface these days.

NT USB support will be problematic. 2000 should be little problem.
