New Just think
Those same scared, undertrained NG troops now compromise ~40% of the troops in Iraq.
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail ... but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Damn...that was fun!"
New Re: Just think
They must be getting pretty long in the tooth if they're the same troops. This "stop-loss" policy is more stringent than I realized.

New Could be....
I went AD in '72. USAR in '83. My CSM from '83 is now my daughter's NG CSM! You don't make CSM in less than 10 years, usually between 15-20 years.

For the uninitiated:
AD - Active Duty
USAR - United States Army Reserve
CSM - Command Sergeant Major
NG - National Guard (Unless otherwise stated, Army National Guard)

..end to organized resistance ?
What mean ??

That outrage intensified the resistance!
and while Berkeley was ~~ Ground Zero and hardly typical of US towns, cities - it's clear in hindsight that it Was the "resistance" of eventually, millions -- and not the cowardly Congress -- which forced the ending.

(Hard to tell what the denouement would have been like though, sans Watergate - what with Tricky Dick dragging heels over 'peacewithhonor cha cha cha' and similar bafflegab we always hear from Pols in deep denial).

Yeah, I remember that date.

New Re: 35 Years Ago - May 4, 1970 - Kent State
On 5/4/1970 I was at the end of my junior year
in college
there was a Kent State Strike at our school
which shut it down
more people than ever before participated in
marches and other actions
every vowed to come back in the fall and make
the movement bigger and better than ever

never happened

that was the last gasp

in 1968 the left was powerful enough to sink
Humphrey
in 72 the left forced McGovern on the Democratic
bosses

that was the last gasp on that level

my future wife (I didn't know her then) was
demonstrating in the face of the National Guard
at Kent State when they opened fire

that was the end

military power outranked flower power

New nope outrage was dulled by amphetamines and money
those that had given for free were now charging and discovering the wonders of the burocracy, create a need and make a living managing that need at taxpayer expense. Victory gardeners turned into country club residents. A few true beleivers hung on, others went underground while the masses got jobs and vaguely remember the "good old days"

New Re: 35 Years Ago - May 4, 1970 - Kent State
My understanding was that the Kent State incident was the beginning of the end of the war in Vietnam; the event that finally turned the American public against the idea en masse.
