Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Thank you
The program does not know if the job was aborted, it does not maintain that level of state.

I tend to keep my message short. I follow, "Are your lights on?" school of troubleshooting.

But in this case, you are right, so here's what I've come up with. Feel free to make suggestions.

\nThis job [$job] has already been submitted and the system believes\nit is still running. The system cannot allow two jobs with the same\nname to run at the same time.\n\nIf the job aborted, it will still be locked until you unlock it. In\nthat case, you should have received an email telling you it aborted\nand why.\n\nIf you have not received any messages, it is likely the job is either\npending in the job queue or currently still running. Large jobs competing\nwith other jobs waiting for MF downloads or uploads can take a long time.\n\nIn order to check, go to the following web screen to check the SGE status\nof active and pending jobs: [link|http://xxxxxxx/q_stat.pl|http://xxxxxxx/q_stat.pl]\n\nIf the job is no longer running, and if you have resolved the reason for\nthe abort (by modifying to control files, placing required files in the\ncorrect locations, etc) then you should resubmit the job, using the\nCLEAR_LOCKS=1 flag to tell the system it should allow the run.\n\n\nDo NOT use CLEAR_LOCKS=1 if the job is still running. You will damage\nyour files.\n\nIf you are unable resolve the issue, please call your local support person.\n

I have seen your say or write... gosh, Todd has that much effect on you.

Todd, beware your masterful prowess at convincing.

New Nice has nothing to do with it
The main reason for a decent message is to keep the end-user's from asking for help. The fact it allows them to actually continue to do their job is secondary.
Todd pointed out that I was failing, and the result of that failure would be more work for me, talking to end users. So I fixed it.

Man, I hate those long lines. But I'm stopping myself from going back and "fixing" them.
New Thank you for your sacrifice.
BTW, am I hallucinating, or... Didn't we used to have a user setting to regulate the width of this input textbox?

If you can't find it either, ask Scott to resurrect that for you -- then you could let the textbox do *soft* auto-wraps for you while writing.

Your lies are of Microsoftian Scale and boring to boot. Are you thinking of the "Wider/Narrower/Taller/Shorter - Change" drop-down and button at the bottom of the Posting screen? It hasn't stuck in my head what that does...

Cheers,
Scott.

New Practically never
But that is usually a good sign that they don't really know what they are doing.

Self criticism is a great sign of maturity.

Fave programmer question - so what's wrong with your favorite language? The wrong answer is "nothing".

New How about this answer
"What's wrong with my favorite language is that it's the best one I've found so far. They all suck. Every minute I spend learning syntax is a minute I don't spend doing something worthwhile. Anyone who actually enjoys code for its own sake is a useful idiot."

What, me cynical? Nah.

And yes, I sometimes appreciate code for its own sake.

New Its great
Heck, its the answer I gave. Well, sorta. I was pretty emphatic that while I'm still plenty good at it, I'm kind of tired of it.

Its an OK answer for a potential manager I think, but not for a dev position.

I would press for more detail on why, while its the best so far, it still sucks. Just to be sure he understands something of the language he's dissing (IOW, is he dissing from authority).
