I'll be darned: OAKLEY, Calif. - An Oakley man has asked the federal government to rename Mount Diablo, saying the current name, which means devil in Spanish, is offensive to his religious sensibilities. [emphasis added, natch]
Art Mijares applied to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names for the change and suggests naming the mountain Mount Kawukum, which he believes has American Indian roots.
"Words have power, and when you start mentioning words that come from the dark side, evil thrives," Mijares told the Contra Costa Times. "When I take boys camping on the mountain, I don't even like to say its name. I have to explain what the name means. Why should we have a main feature of our community that celebrates the devil?" Won't be just mountains being troubled by this.
Next time you visit the wilds of Tasmania you'll have to look for the Tasmanian Unpleasant, since Tassie Devil is right off the menu,
Speaking of Menu, I guess there's no more Devilled Eggs, or Devil's food cake, or even Devils on Horseback.
Maybe we should just s/Devil/Art Mijares/ and be done with it.
Which could of course lead the the conversation:
"Any plans for this weekend?"
"Oh, I'm going to Mount Art Mijares"
*rasied eyebrows* "Does Mrs Mijares know about this?"
Never mind.
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.

I've got a cousin who works for Helluva Good
Makers of dairy products. They have a monthly email exchange of hate mail with the Dirt Devil company.
So yeah, they are trying to remove the word from the language.
