Am I nuts here?
I have a fulfillment vendor who's opened up a printer on a public IP address and wants me to print invoices directly to that printer.
I said no, and offered a couple of alternatives including establishing a VPN and zipping up the file in a passworded zip archive. I'm getting a lot of flack, including the expected: "We've been doing it that way for years with other clients and haven't had a problem."
What would you do?

What would I do?
Find another vendor.

So would I.
If that decision were up to me.

Wow, now that you mention this...
I have a Print queue that is open to 2 IP Addresses on the Internet.
The thing is, the customer wants an lpr queue, to print stuff to it. They on occasion dump 4+GB to the Queue.
I usually have to split the OS/400 printjob about 10 times, it works, but make sure they understand.

same here
We have one label printer that's open to one external IP address. While everything's transmitted in the clear, it's just a bar code item label w/out any sensitive data on it.

BOFH solution.
Go to an internet cafe and redirect the Library of Congress out their printer. That will solve the problem one way or another.

Hard to say
Perhaps if you posted the IP address, I could give a better opinion. :-)

All you can do it lay out the risks.
All you can really do is point out the risks to them. If they accept it, even if you don't like it, then make sure they know they are accepting the risks completely and against your recommendations. Then when something goes pear-shaped, you can point to the document and say "you accepted the risks".

The problem is who the risks are for
With this setup, anyone can forge an invoice anywhere. That can be bad for your reputation.

How is this different from snail mail?
I have a mailing address. Anyone who wants to can send me an invoice at that address. It's up to me to figure out which ones I should actually pay. What's the difference, except that they're paying for the consumables?
