New Wouldn't work.
Obviously she hasn't been doing much combat or funding terrorism in the last 15 years.

I suppose she could be "disappeared" by one of those CIA flights, but there's the slight problem of all of the publicity. The other patients in the hospice need care so there's going to be lots of witnesses even if they could somehow make the protesters and the press go away.

There's nothing that GWB or Jeb can do at this late hour without breaking the law.

If the Bushes were serious about trying to save her they wouldn't have waited until the last minute.

The Republicans' actions almost two weeks ago was a transparent ploy to appeal to the far right fringe of the party. They thought the rest of the country would go along out of fear of being labelled "murderers" and the like. They thought it would work well as a way to assert their power in preparation for the upcoming judicial confirmation votes. Luckily, so far it hasn't worked.

I'm still concerned by the lack of comment by the Democratic leadership.

And why the hell are [link|http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0328-24.htm|Ralph Nader] and [link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A9803-2005Mar29.html|Jesse Jackson] coming out and sticking their noses in this? They look like even worse ambulance chasers than the Republicans!

For once, I think Krugman [link|http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/29/opinion/29krugman.html?|doesn't go far enough]:

What we need - and we aren't seeing - is a firm stand by moderates against religious extremism. Some people ask, with justification, Where are the Democrats? But an even better question is, Where are the doctors fiercely defending their professional integrity? I think the American Medical Association disapproves of politicians who second-guess medical diagnoses based on video images - but the association's statement on the Schiavo case is so timid that it's hard to be sure.

Come on. It's not the doctors who didn't stand up for science-based medicine in Shiavo's case. The doctors and the judges did their jobs extremely well over the last 7 years. It's the Congress, the Florida Republicans, and President Bush who jumped into this and trampled on the Constitution and the Co-equal judiciary. The Democrats in Congress had a duty to stand in opposition and they chickened out. They knew this stuff was coming since at least [link|http://judiciary.house.gov/newscenter.aspx?A=460|Wednesday March 16] and did nothing to stop it. The bill passed early Monday morning, March 21. (Note that on [link|http://judiciary.house.gov/newscenter.aspx?A=468|Monday] Sensenbrenner announced hearings will be held in April and May on reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act. I wonder how much of a fight the Democrats will put up on that...)

Grr.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Re: Wouldn't work.
I'm still concerned by the lack of comment by the Democratic leadership.

That's because Democrats are split on this one; many voted for that bill. I find it particularily interesting that a couple of the more vocal Democrats who supported it are up for reelection in 2006:
Sen. Kent Conrad (news, bio, voting record) of North Dakota, facing a potentially difficult race in 2006, said of Schiavo, "Her parents want to give her a chance. I think of my own daughter. We ought to give her a chance."

Sen. Bill Nelson (news, bio, voting record) from Schiavo's home state, also on the ballot in 2006, noted changes made from an earlier version of the legislation. He said he supported the bill "so that this case can be reviewed and decided in a timely manner."
If the country was so against this, you'd think they would have taken a different stance...

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them."   --Albert Einstein

New wrong, very carefully calculated
the right "base" very clearly see that Terri's husband abrogated husband rights by getting laid at least twice in the past 15 yers. Mommy and Daddy know best. The left is aghast that radical repo's rushed to change laws to make this case come out just the way they wanted it and are pleased that they failed. This demarks exactly on the last elections outcome leaving the thinking folks out in the cold as usual. Free thinkers dont sway elections only the supervoters do.
thanx,
bill
