New Linux 'net speed slower than Windows?
I'm not really sure how to determine whether this is a real problem or not, but it *seems* as if my internet access, especially the time it takes to connect to and load web pages, is significantly faster when I'm booted into XP than it is when I'm working in Mepis.

At this point I don't know what to look for to try and figure out what the problem is, if there is one. Any thoughts?

New Tweak the network settings in Firefox/Mozilla.
Peter made a good post on it here recently.

My Z search Foo isn't very good today. Can't find it in a few.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New The only one that makes a noticeable difference...
...is the nglayout.initialpaint.delay one.

Everything else is fluff. Just do that single one. Why on earth it's not on as a default, I don't know, because it's worked on every installation of FF I've used, on every type of connection, from broadband to dialup to GigE LAN.

Not being familiar with the innards of the HTTP protocol specification, I cannot rule out that it's some oft-ignored but obscure requirement.

New Actually, in some cases it might be
I seem to recall certain IIS web servers sending a certain header type that will only trigger a response in IE. When the response is recieved, it then does a bunch of non-legal stuff to spead up the transfer, which of course only works with IE.

If it doesn't get the response, it thens sends out the normal HTML.

So this means non-IE browsers 1st get garbage they ignore, a timeout happens, and then they get the real page.

New Is that before or after applying the tweaks linked above?
