New Distro Question
Dangerous title. :)

I always liked the way Debian's apt-get update method worked, but I never liked actually installing Debian. I was looking for Debian-based alternatives, so I looked at Xandros, and it looke pretty good (it reminds me of the old Corel Linux -- are these the guys who bought that?) Are they the company that nuked apt in favor of their own proprietary update tool? Or was that Linspire?

New No and No.
You're probably thinking of Caldera.

For a debian based alternative that's easy to install, I'd say it boils down to two choices:

Ubuntu, if you like GNOME and Mepis, if you like KDE.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New I thought Caldera was Red Hat based.

New Eh?
Xandros was Corel Linux in another life. Corel Linux was based on Debian.

Chris - Try Simply Mepis. It's very good.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Xandros still is Debian Based.

New Try Mepis.
  • It's Debian-based
    1. uses Synaptic as it's update tool
    2. uses Debian test and unstable for most of it's packages
    3. apt-get update - apt-get upgrade works right after installation
  • It has great hardware detection and support
  • it has it's own configuration gui that's clean and simple to use
  • installation is a snap - it installs everything from the LiveCD first (Firefox, Openoffice, Gimp, yadayadayada), so you don't have to wait for download or clog your network pipes on initial install

I've given out a number of Mepis CDs, and it's VERY well received. In fact, I like the distro enough that I've subscribed to the service in order to help support development.

Mepis is a business, BTW - the way they do it is that they sell access to their ftp server to users of their 'latest and greatest' versions, but versions from that point earlier are available for the general public. I suggest you try out one of the free CDs; you'll REALLY like it.

New I'll try it tonight.
How well does its install handle resizing NTFS partitions without destroying any of the data on it? Should I get Partition Magic to prep the drives first? I'll need it to co-exist peacefully (if uneasily) with XP for a while...

New Check this thread.
Check my experiences in [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=185006|this] thread and Greg's replies.

Bottom line - use the right tool to work on the partition and you should be fine. Backup anything you can't afford to lose (but you do that anyway, right?). You shouldn't need Partition Magic, but will need a similar gnu tool.

Cheers,
Scott.
New What? Backup?
But I've never had any experiences where I've lost data before... :D

Thanks for the link.

New The NEW Debian-Installer is vera nice.
[link|http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/i386/|Index of D-I for i386]

The new installer is MUCH MUCH better than anything Woody/Potatoe/Slink has or had... There are legions of people singing the praises of the New Installer. It installs Sarge (which is the Next Stable release) which is version 3.1. Lotsa lotsa nice things there.

And, if you are going to install Debian, use the Net-Install, it just works. Except for some occasional Hardware issue.

Or, try Ubuntu Linux. What a nice setup. Really.

Mephis is also good.
