The two party system - the good news
[link|http://marlowe-essays.blogspot.com/2005/02/two-party-system-in-america-and-why-it.html|In my previous post] I painted a rather dark picure of the future of American politics after the self destruction of the Democrat party. It was a deliberately one-sided view. Now I would like to offer some reasons for hope. For starters, the loss of one party would not in fact leave the other party utterly devoid of restraint. It so happens that we have another mechanism in place to deal with this. It's called the separation of powers. Here's how it works... suppose the Republicans maintain absolute control over both the White House and Congress for an extended period of time, long enough to become a bit tipsy from the power. There's still the Supreme Court. Conspiracy theories about the 2000 election aside, the fact is the Republicans do not control the judicial branch. It's not uncommon for the highest court to strike down one or another practise with regards to terror suspects or Guantanamo Bay inmates. The administration does *not* always get its way, even on issues concerning national security. Some of the more dimwitted folk on the left half of the political spectrum chortle with glee whenever this happens. I think they don't fully grasp the implication: that the Democrat party may be expendable. Beware when someone else does your job better than you. Now, this doesn't mean we shouldn't be concerned... LOL..
The great and awful thing about the Web is you can't disown your words. You're on record, cached who knows where. Even if you delete a post, it may not be entirely gone. (Remember Michael Moore's Payback Tuesday?) In ten years or so, I'll either be proven right, proven wrong, or proven partly right and partly wrong. That's the chance we all take. So here goes nothing. chuckle, you already were proven wrong a long time ago.

He calls it "Big Fat Thoughts"
...which shows more self-awareness than I'd given the bot credit for. All flab, no sinew. I took a few minutes to investigate the poor thing's site, and was amused to see that he has apparently gone to the trouble of looking up Eric Hoffer, who long ago limned Philbot's type, and has attempted to mimic Hoffer's aphoristic style. Alas, it doesn't work for the poor thing, although this series is better than most: Personal loyalty is prized by criminals. Decent people are loyal only to principle.

By way of further explanation...
the ussc doesnt always march in lockstep with the party that put them in there. Very true. However, consider the premise in the Philbert's hilarious post: Conspiracy theories about the 2000 election aside, the fact is the Republicans do not control the judicial branch. Given The Rove/Hastert/DeLay Axis of Evil's plans for the Judiciary, and considering that The Axis still doesn't get the message and has resubmitted the names of the 10 Unacceptables back to the Senate (aside: isn't one of the definitions of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?), the goal of The Axis is transparent: to control the Judicial branch just like it appears to control the Executive and Legislative Branches. Philbert's Pollyanish throwaway about the judiciary is as ludicrous as it is hypocritical; for all his (and those of like "mind") wailings and protestations and gnashing of teeth about "activits judiciaries" and "strict interpretation of the Constitution" and other such tommyrot, the truth of the matter is that they really want an activist judiciary -- so long as it is activist in the "right" way (pun intended). Even though it is possible that a Judiciary stacked the way The Axis wants it may still exhibit a collective set once and a while, and politely smack The Axis's wrist occasionally, a stacked Judiciary is the final lynchpin in the ultimate destruction of this country that Philbert and his ilk are so fervently working (and praying) for. So pardon me while I chuckle sadly at the disingenuousness of Philbert's bleatings in this area, because that's the only response that a sane person could reasonably be expected to emit as such patent bullshit.

Besides, Ronald McDonald did sow the seeds for the current travesty, so I guess I don't see your point.
