New Why now... and why that way?
Sure a split needs to be there... but why?

Why Server vs Desktop

I use Desktop machines doing server tasks.

sure I want DRI/OpenGL/goodies.

What makes a Server so much different than a desktop? Pretty Much, the only thing I can tell is the Amount of Hardware.

There really *IS* no difference, between, "super fine timing" and "performance mininum requirements" and "server performance optimal overall throughput"

Every machine gets that. The kernel is dynamically tunable for either environment... either environment should be able to handle the other one with a few changes.

I think there is not any reason to have Desktop vs Server. The only real difference is the Price of the Hardware.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]
New Difference as I see it
Desktop is all about perceived speed of the UI. If I were in charge, I'd have the system auto-renice whatever app I'm currently looking at to be the highest priority. Scratch that, second highest priority. The xserver is always priority 1 through 5. Everything else can fight over the rest.

When a user clicks on the menu bar, the menu should appear instantly. When the user drags the window that he's currently playing a dvd in, it shouldn't skip just because he's also building mozilla from source and rendering a 48M PovRay world in the background.

That's how I'd do a desktop.

New That is a sorry excuse for a reason.
There are porjects out there that are already trying to do that.

So that means you'd have to have an X server. Addin for X.Org or Xfree86 or what have you.

What has focus? query the X server about what is on top of the ROOT Window. Change its priority...

Dunno if anyone has been able to remove the lag.

One thing I do know, that issue you bring up afflicts many OS and the myriads of versions.
