There are places...
...near me that you can stay that will save you a few quid. I can also get you into some nice places downtown at some discounted rates if need be...but downtown will guarantee over 100US per night. There will be alot going on over there that week, as Independence Day is a big deal in the Cradle of Liberty, dontcha know.
There's always my house, too. Rooms are severaly discounted for the party :-)We'll be there through the party...and the following weekend off to the wedding of my nephew. Floorspace is at a premium Friday and Saturday...but long distance travlers get preferred seating.
Plenty to see, Independence Mall, Liberty Bell, Boathouse Row, Gino's and Pat's (cheesesteak central), my pool, Aquarium, USS New Jersey, the IWETHEY gang. We'll fill your agenda.
Places not to see, north Philly around Temple U, West Philly under the El...that is unless you like bullets...me...I'm allergic ;-)
We should also avoid Camden NJ. Same reasons as above.
Did I leave anything out Imric?

Not to see?
I've been to all those places, I was never shot at. If you hear loud *crack*s, then just pretend the sound is a firecracker...
As for 'sights', well, there's the Jersey Shore (AC or the 'Canadian Riviera', Wildwood) - I'd say take him to see the creepy abandoned buildings in Asbury Park, but I think they finally tore them down...
And, if he has time to sitesee, then there are any number of NYC landmarks; MOMA, Ms. Liberty, the Empire State building, etc, etc...

Re: Not to see?
There are also DC capabilities from here. 2.5 hrs south as opposed to 1.5 hours north.
Just a trainride away. White House, Smithsonian, various monuments, etc...
George Bush will likely be on vacation (what are the odds? :-))

Gotta go to South Street
to Jim's Steaks for a cheese steak.

Not impressed with Jim's -- too dry
But if you must do South Street -- to see all the other tourists there checking out South Street -- I recommend Manny Brown's, if it's still there. Temper this testimonial with the 14+ years it's been since I was last there.
