New Bush to gay marriage foes: "Gotcha suckah!"
[link|http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A19167-2005Jan18.html|http://www.washingto...67-2005Jan18.html]

Social conservatives who helped stoke record turnout for Bush in the 2004 election expressed concern that he is dropping the issue he passionately touted during the campaign now that he has been reelected. "The president is willing to spend his political capital on Social Security reform, but the nation is greatly conflicted on that issue," said Minnery, vice president of public policy for Focus on the Family. "The nation is united on marriage. The president's leadership is desperately needed." Minnery and Perkins called the White House to complain about Bush's position.

Hey man, you've been punked!

"Whenever you find you are on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect"   --Mark Twain

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them."   --Albert Einstein

"This is still a dangerous world. It's a world of madmen and uncertainty and potential mental losses."   --George W. Bush
New Pretty much as expected
Bush letting up on that issue is pretty much what everybody that has paid attention expected. A constitutional admendment would be a major challenge to pass, Bush's attention to the reactionary social part of the party has always been lip service, and a lot of Republican political people would rather gay marriage remain an open issue anyway.

Bush has gone back and forth on this one though. I suspect that the politcal advisors in the White House think the religious right need to be given a reward after the last election. I can see Bush letting somebody in Congress pick up the gay marriage issue and run with it, particularly when we get close to the 2006 mid term elections.

New I disagree.
You're giving Bush, his ownself, entirely too much credit. Like the reference to steroids in baseball in his State of the Union address, I think this gay marriage nonsense was what he personally wanted.

It'd never pass, of course. And that is why I suspect his aides talked him out of it.
