I should note that Free software is very rarely propagated through USENET (why bother? An HTTP or FTP download is much easier), and the likes of [link|http://www.legaltorrents.com|http://www.legaltorrents.com] have got the Free music scene covered.
So while downloading binaries is not of necessity copyright infringement, I'd hazard a guess that the vast majority of material in alt.binaries.* is there without the blessing of the copyright holder.
Hence my split sympathies :-)
