New Re: date
Would the issuing:

date --help

be of possible help for the problem you had?

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
New No, what?
The man page on HPUX is pretty decent (and, yes, it gives examples.)

"Normal" Unix date doesn't offer the --help option.

New The meaning of "No"
I think that's pretty self-sufficient of itself. The --help option doesn't provide any additional illumination on the format required to set the date, under my Debian GNU/Linux install. The full relevant text is "-s, --set=STRING     set time described by STRING". Astute readers will note that the format for STRING is not defined in this context.

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
New With the Unices available to me...
...Tru64 and Mac OS X/Darwin/BSD/callitwhatyouwill both have good date doco, with clear descriptions of the format required to set the date.

Rant On: On a completely different tack, the man page for ssh on Tru64 is simply appalling. It's presented in 80 columns, no matter what. Not a single paragraph break in the whole thing. It seems descriptive text is there, but everything else was ommitted. Take this bit for example, which would seem to be a description of command line options, except there's no clue as to what those options might actually be:

Specifies
the number of password prompts before giving up. The argument to
this keyword must be an integer. Default is 3. Specifies
whether to use password authentication. The argument to this
keyword must be or Note that this option applies to both protocol
version 1 and 2. Specifies the port number to connect on the
remote host. Default is 22.

Ick. ick. ick.
Rant off:

Phew. I feel better now.

New Eew.
Looks like faulty nroff/groff processing.

At least you've got SSH. I did some work in the DFT the other day, using SSH to communicate with two Linux firewalls. SSH was a rather unfamiliar concept to the Unix staff; they normally blast around the place with telnet... It amazes me that something so recent as HP-UX 10.x still encourages telnet and still permits root to telnet in. I know it probably shouldn't, but it still amazes me.

New SSH
Well, we sort-of have it. In so far as it doesn't really work since the machine was rebooted. *sigh* That was about two months ago.

But with the man page the way it is, perhaps it's slightly less of a surprise.

New Can Linux copy other manual pages?
As I said, the HPUX man page is pretty decent. Perhaps the maintainers of the Linux "date" man page could take a clue from them. (grits teeth) I don't have a Linux system online right now, maybe one of you could submit a more decent man page.

(I'd do it if I had some flavor of Linux connected. My Linux 'puter is currently sitting in the hallway, alas)
