PPPoE
Can somebody give me ONE GOOD FUCKING REASON why anybody would use this ABOMINATION FROM HELL? I mean, explain the concept - you have a perfectly good ethernet connection, and instead of maintaining it, YOU TRANSFORM IT INTO A FUCKING DIALUP LINE, THAT OFTEN REQUIRES CUSTOM SOFTWARE EVEN THOUGH XP HAS A SUPPOSED PPPoE CLIENT BUILT IN!
I'd like to find the guy who thought of PPPoE and kick him in the 'nads. Repeatedly. With a big spike over my toe.

Most hardware routers/firewalls have PPPoE built in
But yeah, it sucks.

How about trying
PPP over HTTP for true Firewall piercing capacity.
PPPoE sucks the big bad nads.

Price, my ass.
(Note - this isn't for my own internet service, this is for a bunch of people I support at work who work from home and had preexisting Earthlink contracts)
Earthlink and QWest/MSN use PPPoE for their connections.
Speakeasy doesn't.
They both use the same lines.
Go figure.

They must be providing a router, then.
Or are the other two doing it for a larf?

Considering QWest offers an "upscale" offering...
...that uses the same equipment, but no PPPoE, ("Always on internet!") it appears to be some kind of market segmentation thing.

Qwest line with local ISP
No PPPoE here. Qwest provided modem/router, which I have configured just as a bridge. My inlaws have Qwest/MSN with the same modem/router..but it uses PPPoE. I do my routing and firewalling with a linux box (IPCop) as I have a /29 network from my ISP.

No.
I don't have to deal with that nonsense, and I use DSL.

It is for login processing and accounting
In the old days the ISPs used a dialup account and did the tcp/ip portion via Trumpet Winsock. The authentication style of a login/connection and then tcp/ip stayed with us, even though the hardware has changed. As long as they maintain PPPoE, they don't have to track MAC addresses or any specific equipment identifiers to allow you on.

Like I said...
...give me a good TECHNICAL reason, not some bullshit "I'm too lazy to handle hardware properly for what is going to be a SINGLE point of access application..."

No you didn't.
ONE GOOD FUCKING REASON
I gave you a perfectly good reason, at least for the people who chose to implement it at the time. And then the infrastructure accreted around it, and then it became too painful to change without a good reason.
Why don't YOU give THEM ONE GOOD FUCKING REASON why they should change it, and make sure it is cost effective for them.
