XP Shortcut Icons corrupted
All shortcut icons, including those in the start menus are the same, all start an OpenOffice executable which was in the startup folder. If Open Office is deinstalled, all the icons start nothing.
All icons show the OpenOffice icon on the desktop or start menu, but looking a properties they point to the correct programs and if you use the "change icon" button your selections are the correct icon - but you can't change the icon - it doesn't take.
Making a new shortcut icon for a program produces an icon just like all the rest - all the right properties but it loads OpenOffice and displays the OpenOffice icon image.
Deleting the IconCache.db has no effect whatever on what you get after reboot.
Anybody seen this?
Oh yeah, the Windows executable icons didn't work either, but a "repair" reinstall of XP put them back and they work.

Can you run the command shell
and start programs correctly from there?
Only other thought that pops into my head is maybe the prefetch directory under windows is hosed.

Couldn't at first . .
It couldn't even find "dir", but a repair reinstall of XP put all the executables back and they work, including the command line, but their shortcut icons like in "Accessories" are all nonfunctional and have the OO image. Making a new desktop shortcut icon for Explorer by drag and drop produces a non-functional icon.

Is .lnk associated with OO.o ?
In A Folder Window: Tools->Folder Options->File Types
It shouldn't be associated with anything in that list. The .lnk association is built-in AKAIK.
Any tips on how to fix would just be me passing on Google search results.

Well, it definitely was . . .
. . good shot. Trouble is, after deleting the .lnk from the list I get nothing and the icons can't find an associated file, so it must be associated with something. I'll need to do some investigating on that.

OK Microsoft has a document on how to restore that.

Just clarifying...
So you've solved the problem you created in trying to solve the original problem?
Doesn't life always seem to go that way?

Usually, but not quite this time.
The first step in Microsoft's instructions was to delete the .lnk association so I did the right thing for once - I just needed more steps beyond that.

Can TweakXP do anything?
For several versions, TweakUI and kin have had various rebuild this or that commands. Maybe they could help.

It's supposed to . .
. . but once the problem was correctly identified the fix is easy to do by hand if you're willing to hand edit the registry - which I'm accustomed to 'cause I do it every week to fix somebody's worms or parasites.
This machine is coming back with the same problem in the morning. Turns out it was caused by trying to uninstall Napster (the new paid for version) or another program he'll give me the name of. I'll probably have to get those out of the registry by hand too.
Now that I've got it pegged, the icon thing is a 5 minute fix.
